Sharks will play their Springboks in Currie Cup
Article Published: Tuesday 11 October 2011

The Sharks will field several of their returning Springboks in this week's crucial Currie Cup rugby encounter against the Lions in Durban, coach John Plumtree has confirmed.

Eight players are available again following South Africa's exit from the World Cup on Sunday, among them captain John Smit.

The defending champions, who must win their final regular season match at Kings Park with a bonus point to secure a home semi-final, have struggled throughout the campaign with their lack of power and experience among the forwards.

"There's a very good chance of seeing some of our Boks back," Plumtree said on Tuesday.

"We trained really well today and we will assess how they get off the plane and how they're feeling mentally and physically.

"All year we've struggled up front, and no disrespect to the guys we've had, but the opposition had bigger men.

"This week, things can change for us in that department, and if not this week, then next weekend."

It means Du Plessis brothers Bismarck and Jannie, Tendai Mtawarira and Willem Alberts could all feature, while Ryan Kankowski, sidelined for more than a month with a thumb injury, may all return.

"We will go into games with more confidence knowing that we can carry some weight across the advantage line and more confident that we won't be out-muscled at the collisions and at set piece times," Plumtree said.

"That will definitely help our strategy if we know we can compete on the gain-line and get across the gain-line with our ball-carriers as well as having big defenders as well."

This looks good. Seems like the Lions advantage (from not having any players missing through Springbok duty) is over. My predicted line-up:

1. Tendai Mtawarira
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Anton Bresler/Jean Deysel
5. Alistair Hargreaves/Ross Skeate
6. Keegan Daniel
7. Marcell Coetzee
8. Willem Alberts
9. Conrad Hoffmann
10.Frederic Michalak
11.Lwazi Mvovo
12.Marius Joubert
13.Adrian Jacobs
14.JP Pietersen
15.Patrick Lambie

You'd pick Coetzee over Deysel? Interesting. Seems like I'll have to keep an eye open.

They have been using them all season. There are actually quite a number of SA capped players there.

Coetzee is the next Schalk Burger. He is fast, strong, great offload. He has serious Springbok potential. That and the fact that Deysel is needed elsewhere

Allistair Hargreaves has a stress fracture in his back, and pending further tests is likely to miss the rest of the comp.

Aid Jacobs is still suffering from the injury he picked up against the Leopards, and will miss this match and possibly the semi.

My predicted line-up:

1. Tendai Mtwarira
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Eugene van Staden/ Wiehahn Herbst
4. Jean Deysel
5. Ross Skeate
6. Keegan Daniel
7. Marcellus Coetzee
8. Wilhem Alberts

9. Conrad Hoffman
10. Fredrick Michalak
11. Lwazi Mvovo
12. Patrick Lambie
13. Marius Joubert
14. Sibusiso Sithole
15. Oupa

16. Craig Burden/ John Smit
17. Wiehahn Herbst
18. Jan- Andre Marais
19. Ryan Kankowski
20. Odwa Ndungane/ Jacques Botes
21. Ross Cronje
22. Jacque-Louis Potgeiter

Omissions:

Jannie has played sooo much of late, can't seem him featuring this week.
JP was an injury doubt going into the Aussie game, no point risking.
Odwa is... Odwa :D depends if Plum goes for a 4/3 or 5/2 split
Smit should also get a rest, whether it is deserved or not is irrelevant.
I think I've missed someone...

We should win this, and as number of wins are taken before points difference, we don't really need to worry about the BP.

Deysel and Skeate in the second row makes me feel slightly ill.
Despite my possible mancrush on Deysel, I think Coetzee is the better option on the blindside. He seems like he could be a more complete player and work well with Daniel.
We need to get our eight sorted. Kanko is only really useful in an open game, while Alberts might be better for a tight one, his handling is too risky.
Any chance of Coetzee making an eight in the future?

Anyone think Prinsloo is worth another shot at fullback? We are in the semis anyway and he could benefit from the gametime. This should have been done a month ago, but Ludik was in good form and difficult to drop.

Deysel in the second row... I would put Kankowski there. We've been over that, Draggs ;)

Kanko has the height, weight and strength to play lock. However, I prefer him at center together with Lambie... His offloads, pace and technique would make him a more than decent center (Like Nick Koster)

Jumping on my Kanko at 13 bandwagon? ;)

Why play him at SR when we have Bresler, Marais (and Marais Jr.) and Hargreaves?
He could cover lock for the Sharks but he would really be wasted there.
Someone with a bit of ballast is needed in the second row, and Kankowski doesn't really have that compared to natural locks.

What we need to do, is tell Deysel that he doesn't have to stand still to hand-off an opponent.

Yes, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO RUN JEAN!

Imagine if he understood this...

Just seen the Lions team, missing a handful of first choicers.

Only noticed now that we are playing this match in Durban... What was wrong with me, thinking it was at Ellis Park???

This will be easy!!!

42-10

And we are now damned to lose.
Elton Jantjies to actually play a decent game and be named as the Bok's next 10.
Lambie (and Goosen, just for fun) are banned from ever playing.
Chiliboy is appointed Springbok captain for life and Terblanche announces that he will live (and play) forever.
Ross Skeate is cloned to make our entire pack and Bresler is sent back to Namibia.

All because of such a flattering prediction. :p

Will be interested to see how many Springboks will be included in the team.

The Sharks

15. Patrick Lambie
14. Odwa Ndungane
13. Stefan Terblanche
12. Marius Joubert
11. Lwazi Mvovo
10. Frederic Michalak
9. Conrad Hoffmann

8. Ryan Kankowski
7. Marcell Coetzee
6. Keegan Daniel (Captain)
5. Ross Skeate
4. Jean Deysel
3. Wiehahn Herbst
2. Craig Burden
1. Eugene van Staden

Replacements
16. Bismarck du Plessis
17. Jannie du Plessis
18. Willem Alberts
19. Jacques Botes
20. Ross Cronje
21. Jacques-Louis Potgieter
22. JP Pietersen

Interesting to say the least...

No Sithole, boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo *inhale* BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

That backline is giving me a funny (bad) feeling.
Senior discount midfield and halfbacks of varying form.
Back three lacks real excitement, Lambie and Ndungane are not incredibly pacy or great counter attackers. I feel for Sithole who has performed very well while the stars have been away and is now dropped.

Having only one actual second row is rather frightening, especially since it is Ross Skeate.

How many positions/ players on the run on our run on team do you guys think are actually better (form and attribute wise) than their direct counterparts?

I say 15, 11, 10, 6, 4 (van Heerden hasn't done much lately) and 2

Apart from Botes we win hands down on the bench (assuming Elton is subbing scrum-half)

Argh, not this ref again.

We haven't started at all well...

Kanko looking lively and making yardage.

15th minute, Michalak try 7-3

My only hope of making it through today intact is a four try Sharks victory.
Kanko denied a try by the TMO.

Michalak try, confirmed by the TMO.
