Doping in Rugby

what? you can't buy from a dealer online, it is illegal.

Err, no. Anabolic Steroids are NOT illegal in the same sense that drugs like "P", cocaine and heroin are illegal.

Anabolic steroids are allowed for use with a prescription and/or when used under medical supervision (USA Schedule 3, Canada schedule 4). One the the uses of these drug is the stimulation or bone marrow replenishment when a person is suffering hypoplastic anemia due to leukemia. The only reason I know this is because my stepdaughter is a leukaemia survivor, and she was treated with a number of drugs, including prasterone, an anabolic steroid.

My one and only comment on this subject is that anyone who believes that the monoliths that now play the game all do it without assistance of some sort are deluded and anyone who agrees with it is sad!

How do you feel about fence sitters?

Thw whole they're so big they must be on PED's argument doesn't really hold much weight with me. Improvments in s&c, being professionals and people in general being bigger goes a long way to explaining that. There's other more convincing arguments that they're being used.

Regardless of which side of the fence you stand on PED, World Rugby would not "legalise" (relax their laws) or endorse there use, even under supervision, as Rugby is now an Olympic sport, and they will want to cash in on that, both financially, and in terms of popularity.

Yes, I know PED's are rife at the Olympics, but all Olympic sports are meant to do there part in policing/education etc.

The argument making PED accessible/legal to take within rugby, because other things are available/legal, but are dangerous too, is a flawed one IMO - Cars are dangerous, I have access to one that I can choose to use legally/illegally/safely/dangerously ... it doesn't mean I should be given access to a machine gun.

Use for rehabilitation V enhancement is an interesting one - but as others have said, the lines between the two could quite easily merge in some cases.

The point about liability for administering them is probably as good of an argument for not advocating there use, as any - if clubs/unions/individuals can be held financially liable for ill effects on a player, they probably won't administer them.

A few years ago, admittedly, a french player with what is now an Aviva club was told that he needed to bulk up and was told how he was to do it. He pointed out that his contract included a no drugs clause and the club manager acknowledged this clause......he did not have a contract at the end of that season!

Not saying this is the norm but.............

which, if you read back, is exactly what I've been saying, Steroids administered with a prescription are fine, buying them off the internet/dealer IS illegal (at least in the UK) which is the point you're replying to.

Yep, exactly. Good post. It's not so much about "drugs = bad, mkay?", it's about the practical realities from a business and legal standpoint. The wider members of society don't just go along with what you're saying because you want them to.

Interesting discussion though. :)

I used to buy prasterone for my stepdaughter online from a pharmacy in the UK because it was about 1/4 of the price in NZ even after paying for shipping. Customs called me when it arrived, and all I had to do was provide her medical certificate and a prescription to pick it up (no import duty or GST either). It is not correct to call buying anabolic steroids online illegal. Yes it is restricted, but no more so that buying numerous other types of prescription medicines online.

Buying & selling Class A drugs is illegal (online or not), in fact in most countries it is not just illegal, it is a criminal offence.

BTW, Anabolic Steroids are unrestricted in Mexico, which is why many of the shady labs producing stuff used by athletes are based there.

Agreed.

My Trainer has an online store where you can buy steroids, PED's and supplements. If he has his license to sell these products, then what is the problem??

The problem is you don't live in the UK.

Where it is illegal to buy them online/by mail order.

I could list a number of Super Rugby players who have been on or are still on the juice, however I refuse to become a whistle blower.

Not saying I doubt you, but how do you know? Without going into specific individuals or teams. Are you mates with people inside the Union?
