Euro 2020[1]

England national football team: a prime example of overblown patriotism, expectation and national disappointment since 1966.

England look like they do in every major competition.
Rabbit in the headlights, the old players don't have the swag, Southgate doesn't have the bottle to start Grealish, Rashford and Sancho.

Harry Kane is put as on the pedestal for English football, but he just doesn't get the big games at Spurs to imo deserve it.
Of the 11 goals in Spurs only major Champions league run Kane only scored 1 of them, and wasn't he even a main feature in the games due to injury till the final and they lost that 0-2

Been the case as long as I have watched England unfortunately. Not sure there's an answer why England play with this massive millstone around their neck. Each generation of player who plays for England seems to feel it.

Goes back to football being a sport with such a massive pool and England being somewhere in the middle in terms of quality, when playing together. It's England fans' expectations which need tempering.

Big game on Tuesday but wouldn't be surprised if that plays out as a draw and both teams just happy to qualify on 5 points - good enough. Save the energy for the knock out stages.

Scotland v Croatia - still see Croatia winning that unless Scotland can find a goalscorer.

It's down to the coaching and the press IMO.
The press and public like to push for a English but no English coach has won the premier league.

English coaches generally like to play a defensive style IMO largely down to the fact that none of the top teams want a English coach because they play crap style of football, so the only clubs they can coach are either relegation fodder or the plucky mid table team that tries to grab a draw against the big boys.
It's the I eat because I'm fat and I'm fat because I eat conundrum.

Every England manager is basically Mike Bassett

I honestly feel that you give the job to someone like Rodgers and England could do well, respected in the English game, knows the English players. Likes to play counter attack football which is IMO our only chance currently of playing a more attacking minded football.

But England have had two foreign coaches in Eriksson and Capello. Both coaches have produced just as bad performances from their England teams.

The problem is trying to play counter attack football, especially when playing at home, when the onus is on England to attack and make the play. Works when teams are attacking England and England can then just sit back and counter attack. But what happens when teams don't? Space is at a premium, especially in international football.

Probably a style which is close to Liverpool where they press the opposition high up the pitch is more suitable to England. Needs high energy though which after the ludicrous amount of games England players playing in the PL, especially last season when games were compacted, they don't seem to have.

Liverpool is a counter attacking gameplan as a foundation. Last year they had the most counter attacking goals in the league.

On sven he was solid about it
Capello steadied a rotting ship after the disaster that was McClaren, but Capello was never gonna work due to him and his staff struggling with the language and cultural differences really heightened around the world cup

Yeh as I said needs a high press up the pitch with energy. Players need to be fresh for that game plan. also need the players to enact that game plan. Like as soon as Liverpool lost Van Dijk and Gomez to hold a high line and messed about with Fabinho from his holding midfield position the high press game plan went to pot, with the knock effect higher up the pitch.

Also Liverpool rely on their full backs in ATA and Robertson to create the width and get the crosses in. Losing ATA was a big blow for England.

Also Not always the case after a long draining season. And We are only in the group stages. Wait til the knockout stages to see how much energy the players have left in the tank.

Yeh International football isn't easy. But at least France have 2 World cups and 2 Euros to show for it since 1984. Them and Spain used to be the biggest underachievers before 1998.

No excuse for England not to get to at least a final of a major international competition, with the resources at the hands of the FA and especially in the hands of this team to play 6/7 games at Wembley including semi and Final. But Won't do that unless they start playing better football in this tournament.

He was injured for basically the whole thing, not sure it's fair to judge him off that.

Now only 3 short of the international record and joint top scorer.

Would be funny if Germany fail to qualify from the group stage.

Could end up all 3 in the Group going through. Depends on if whoever finishes 3rd being in the top 4 of 3rd place finishes.

Should have known better. Never discount the Germans at a major championship.
