The rumour mill is truly up and running- it appears as if former Bok, Bull and premiership second rower Geo Cronje is poised to make his comeback for the Lions during this year`s Currie Cup.
Cronje, brother of current Bok no8 Jacques, who is probably more infamous for the sordid 2003 Quinton Davids race row, has returned to SA following a 3-year stint in the Premiership. Still only 26, he harbours ambitions of donning the green and gold again. Apparently he`s done a whole lot of soul-searching, as has returned home a changed man.
His considerable bulk, experience, mobility and aggression would certainly be a major boost for the Lions, especially when coupled to the way that the Lions engine room has fired on all cylinders of late. Unfortunately, he`s been involved in a tractor accident on his farm, and couldn`t be considered for this year`s Super 14 as a result of the injuries he sustained.
If he can get his act sorted, and according to reports he has, it would certainly make for an interesting proposition- Cronje and Bakkies Botha fighting it out for the Bok no4 jersey. In fact, with Cronje`s mobility, he might just be a cover option for Vic Matfield in the no5 jumper, even.
Very good signing by the Lions IMO- just the type of experience that the pack might be lacking, especially on overseas tours.
