    Hi Everyone

My Brother in Law and I are going to be doing a coast to coast challenge, what are we actually doing well we are going to be doing two coast to coast bike rides in the space of a week, which will total 250 miles. The challenge is due to start on 12th September 2009, where we will be riding from Ilfracombe on the North Devon Coast to Plymouth on the South Devon Coast and then cycle from Tynemouth on the North East Coast to Whitehaven on the North West Coast of the UK.

We are going to be raising money for the St Mark's Hospital Foundation, which is a hospital which specialises in colorectal and intestinal diseases. The Foundation raises much needed funds for research, education and training for the hospital where the NHS can't.

The key reason for choosing this charity for our ride is my Brother in Law, has suffered from Crohn’s disease from the age of 15 and is now 38, he was referred to St Mark’s in November 2007 and was a patient again in March 2008, during this period he had several examinations and 2 major operations, he has since sustained a period of remission which has made us both keen to show our gratitude to St Mark’s Staff and the work which they do.

Approximately one in 1,500 people have Crohn's disease, and the condition affects slightly more women than men. That means potentially on this forum alone, we have 8 members could potentially suffer from Crohn’s disease. In the UK alone, someone is diagnosed with bowel cancer every 15 minutes, every 30 minutes someone dies. It's stats like these that really starts to make you think. For women we're all familiar with breast cancer and for men prostate cancer is the most common, but for both genders, bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer.

Over the next couple of months we are aiming to raise £1000 to help out the fantastic work which St Mark’s Hospital performs, not only to people of the UK but also internationally.

I hope you will help support me and my brother in law in our challenge.

I'll support this. My gf also suffers from Crohn's disease! She was diagnosed almost two years ago after almost 6months in agony and doctors sending her home claiming it was acid reflux or even in her head! She's been in remission for almost a year now which has let her get back to her life.

I think this is a very important thing you are doing in order in increase the exposure of this disease. It would be nice if no-one else had to go through the hell my gf did before being diagnosed. Little money is invested by the NHS into these diseases, so it's great your doing something about it yourselves. Top work :bravo:

There we go, £20 donated to your good cause.

Good luck. My dad is in training for a bike race as well. Does everyone have "Lance Armstrong Fever"?
...and in no way is "Lance Armstrong Fever" some sort of code for testicular cancer, it's more a reference to everyone's new ferver for cycling. :D

Does he? I'm fairly sure I've never ever read that anywhere. I mean, sure the French all say that, but they would, wouldn't they?
Anyway, this isn't about Armstrong or the French, it's about Charlie and his massive man-efforts! Goooooo Chuck!

Just to update everyone, we have reached out £1000 target before we have even started this great trip.

We would still really appreciate any sponsorship, the more money we raise the better lifestyle we could create for millions around the world.

Also Thank You to everyone who has already sponsored us :)

    Charlie :)

I'm the ONLY on line sponsor from outside of the UK?? That can't be right, this place is brimming with people from all over the world who have a larger income than an average student!

TRFers could join together, first make a donation to one of the members of staff or something and then donate that in one go. Which is just taking a detour really, but it would be nice to see "TRF" as a sponsor, considering all Charlie does for this place :p

    Thanks Laetca

Been struggling to lose a chesty cough over the last couple of weeks so training has gone out of the window recently, still suffering from it tho, which isn't too clever considering its less than 2 weeks to go now...
