Good news for the Stormers

Great news for all the Stormers fans and fellow mountain goats out there- from the official Stormers website- Schalk "Wild Man from Borneo" Burger is back in training, and looking at making his comeback in the pre-season warm-up matches vs the Bulls and Boland.

According to fitness and conditioning trainer Greg Hechter, Burger has been working hard on his fitness and is expected to join his teammates at training on Monday.

"We are very confident that he will be ready for the start of the Super 14. He will be seeing a specialist in another week or two and we will make sure that he is happy. At this stage it seems he will be cleared to play January, which will give us a month and two friendly games to get him confident."

Seems like Schalkie will be doing everything but taking contact in the pre-season drills, but will start taking contact again in January, in time for the 2 warm-up games vs the Bulls at Loftus(13 Jan) and Boland in Wellington(20 Jan) before starting the S14 campaign vs the Cheetahs in Bloem on 3 Feb.

According to Hechter, the rehab of other injured stars Tonderai Chavanga, Peter Grant, Schalk Brits and new signing Conrad Jantjies is also on track to start the S14, barring any further injuries.

Add to this the progress that both Tim Dlulane and Guthro Steenkamp are making at the Bulls, and it seems as if, at long last, a few SA sides might just start this season`s S14 with their actual 1st-choice teams. Good news all round.

Woohoo

Great news, especially schalk brits too, would have loved to see him in the currie cup this year.

Nice to hear about Dulane too, but I thought he had the same type of injury Burger had ?
did he go through surgery too ?

I'm just wondering what this will mean for Luke Watson, I suppose it'll be Burger at 7 and Luke at 6 still ?

Yup Boggle, Dlulane also had the same type of injury that Burger had. Don`t know how our SA boys manage to get over career-threatening neck surgeries so quickly- could be the " braaivleis en pap"!

I also reckon the Stormers will go into the S14 with Schalk at 7, from where he can carry the ball to his heart`s content while still being effective at the breakdown(in essence, getting a 2nd fetcher at blindside), while Luke will probably go in at 6, and Big Joe at 8, much like last year. I just hope that the youngsters like Robbie Diack and Justin Melck gets some game-time too, especially Diack, whom I think is destined to go onto much greater things in the future.
