How long should the ban be?

How under any terms is this not on mid to high end of the scale?

I can accept (although fundamentally disagree with) that no injury means it's not the top end but he's been given a low-end ban!

since this happened in France you quote is irrelevant
Funny earlier you were defending France for not being soft on this now your arguing this soft decision is perfectly fine.

i really think if you are truly so concerned, try writing to LNR and see what their answer is.

no i think the decision is correct and it is not soft, as it was an attempted gouging with no injury, little like biting with no teeth n'est pas i suppose.!!!!

I don't think you're going to get much agreement with the idea that this is not a soft punishment from people outside France.

The crime is for attemtping to gouge, not succesfully doing it! Ashton got 10 weeks for his gouging incident, Francis got 8 weeks. 14 weeks is very soft considering in neither of those cases was there any intent to harm whilst here he was fully committing to ramming his thumbs in the players eyes!

i just love the fact it happens in France and everyone jumps on the anti French band wagon, the problem has been dealt with by the French LNR and whether you like it or not that's the punishment end of, if you want to continue amongst yourselves kindly do so.!!!!!!!!!!!! but the end result will always be the same 14 weeks.no more no less and he may appeal and it come down to 10/12 weeks.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gaston, Galarza got 13 weeks (missed the entire world cup) for neither eye gouging nor attempting to eye gouge, but for the reckless use of his hands in the eye area. That was enough for him to be cited and suspended for approximately the same amount.

I was one of the ones who voted "months" (you can check) so you can't really put me on the "ban him for life" camp. I had a very different number of months in mind to be honest.

It's not an anti-French bandwagon, you see anti-Frenchness all the time. Fact is he got off lightly as players have had similar punishments for far less. That is THE most blatant gouge I've seen and he should have had the rulebook thrown at him, along with the entire works of Shakespeare and Voltaire (so you don't think it's all anti-French). He didn't though.

Kay.

We will continue to discuss how the French authorities take eye gouging less seriously than pretty much any other union.

About what I expect considering the nationalities involved. You can jump up and down and bleat all you like Gaston, but we know the French do not take eye-gouging as seriously as the rest of the rugby playing world because we have seen it for ourselves.

This disgracefully soft sanction is more evidence of it,

Just take a step back and realise that we're talking about a guy maliciously trying to blind another player who is defenseless and in the act of scoring try. Also you're trying to drag this very fair criticism of a union that has not done any justice by the gouged player back to some odd victim complex you have.

Its not jumping on the the Anti French bandwagon!!!!!! the biting incident with Ashton produced just 19 comments, which i think is also a pathetic and dangerous ill disiplined act (which did happen to me on a couple of occaisions while playing), the eye gouging from Ulgade produces 133 comments ( and i do condemn the incident), like it or not its all there in black and white. This has been going on for years we have had salaries, merceneries French this French that etc etc. but don't worry broad shoulders over here we can take the flak!!!!!!!!!

With respect, you can't compare an eye gouging with a bite. A bite, is terrible, yes, but the result of a successful bite is not as severe as a successful gouge. A successful gouge could result in permanent blindness.
The reason this got so much attention was because of vicious the attempt was to gouge the try scoring player. He kept going for the eyes, even when other players were trying to pull him off.

And the fact that this gouge got only one week more than the bite is concerning.

Gaston, if you can't see the difference between biting and gouging, and you can't see that most of the reasons this thread is bigger than the Ashton one has nothing to do with nationality, I don't know what to say.

Also... apart from Smartcookie, you're the guy dragging nationality into this.

Of course i can see the difference, and if you were honest you know full well that whatever hapens in France you all, well lots of you jump on the bandwagon i have given lots of examples over the years, no one is disputing the gravity of the incident we are disagreeing over the length of ban given. Iim not the one dragging Nationality into it you are all doing all the time, eg just 2 days ago the French poaching, SH players the Kiwis have been doing it for years but thats fine no one mentions that!!!, just one small example but there are hundreds.but if it amuses you carry one my friend as i have already stated i have broad shoulders and the only one from France replying to the various accusations.

That's not true, Kiwi's have been getting comments on that topic for years. Australia not so much to be fair, but I think it has been more of a new thing with them.

Hmmm...

Perhaps you should go and read the many threads on the topic of poaching before you spew the lies you are stating now. I think most will agree by now that what NZ is doing isn't poaching, but rather assisting the pacific nations.

As for this incident. It baffles me that he got such a small sentence with the visual footage and intent he showed.

I wonder what would your stance have been on many of the threads if you weren't a french rugby union employee/fanboy...
