How many competitive 22 man squads could NZ have???

I have to say I'm pretty underwhelmed by that 2nd N.Z. pack I'd say many of the 3rd team would be ahead of them. Also you can't just stick a 7 in 6. I'm sure if you picked with players playing in Europe and Japan it would be considerably bolstered.

Time for an ex-pat XV thread...? ;)

We have so many "... XV/22" threads it's not funny.

I think SA and NZ depth is just about equal depending on position. I think we may have the edge on backline depth while SA may have the edge on forwards depth. Aus has about 30-35 players tops. Sixty six would be stretching even the most elastic of rubbers thin. :p

Dammit Feicarsinn, I wanted to do the Ireland 22s!!

Looking at the tigtheads though, we should be grand in the long term with Fitzpatrick, Loughney, Hagan and Furlong and Archer.

Things are beginning to get iffy 22

15. Rob Miller 14. David Strettle 13. Henry Trinder 12. Billy Twelvetrees 11. Ugo Monye 10. George Ford 9. Haydn Thomas; 1. Nick Wood 2. David Paice 3. Duncan Bell 4. Ed Slater 5. Joe Launchbury 6. James Haskell 7. David Seymour 8. Thomas Waldrom; 16. Dean Whitehead 17. Matt Stevens 18. George Robson 19. Luke Wallace 20. Karl Dickson 21. Jordan Turner-Hall 22. Christian Wade

Doesn't he play for Stoke City?

Now, er, I'll give Scotland a go so. Forgive me Scottish fans if I mess up:

First 22:
1. Allan Jacobsen
2. Ross Ford
3. Euan Murray
4. Richie Gray
5. Ally Kellock

14. Lee Jones
15. Stuart Hogg

16. Scott Lawson
17. Geoff Cross
18. Jim Hamilton

Actually, not too bad if I do say so myself. Ally Hogg's retired from Test rugby right?

On a side note, Harry Leonard isn't a bad prospect.
A bit more flair than Duncan Weir, the little Scottish barrel.

Personally, my thoughts for NZ, including injured players, and only looking at XVs...

First XV
1 Woodcock
2 Hore
3 Franks
4 Boric
5 Whitelock
6 Kaino
7 McCaw
8 Read
9 Ellis
10 Carter
11 Savea
12 Nonu
13 Smith
14 Jane
15 Dagg

Second XV
1 Crockett
2 Mealamu
3 Franks
4 Retalick
5 Williams
6 Messam
7 Cane
8 Vito
9 Smith
10 Cruden
11 Savea
12 Williams
13 Kahui
14 Guildford
15 Smith

Third XV
1 Smith
2 Elliot
3 Afeaki
4 Romano
5 Eaton
6 Thomson
7 Braid
8 Shields
9 Kerr-Barlow
10 Barrett
11 Gear
12 Willison
13 Ellison
14 Freuan
15 Taylor

That leaves out a number of great players, such as Faumauina, Flyyn, Taumaifuna, Donnelly, Whitelock, Latimer, Todd, Perenara, Weepu, Leonard, Mathewson, Slade, Masaga, Nanai-Williams, Robinson, Horrell, Ranger, Wulf, Maitland etc.

It's easy to do this for NZ, England, France and SA because of the massive depth and the local competition for talents to develop
But in England's case they aren't talented. It's not a case of naming registered players. ;)

If we're including a 4th XV for New Zealand we could change our selection policy.

1. John Afoa
2. Aled de Malmanche
3. Carl Hayman
4. Brad Thorn
5. Ross Filipo
6. Jerry Collins
7. Craig Newby
8. Chris Masoe
9. Byron Kelleher
10. Nick Evans
11. Joe Rokocoko
12. Luke McAlister
13. Sam Tuitupou
14. Sitiveni Sivivatu
15. Doug Howlett

Could be fairly good.

Nice! Mind if I write that one down and use it later?

Kelleher? Even Ruki Tipuna, Kevin Senio or Tyson Keats would be better options nowadays!
Alad de Malmanche could play hooker and Casey Laulala ahead of Tuitupou any day.

Would Aled de Malmanche do?

to make it easy on myself I'm going to give my top 5 in each position rated 1-5 which would be 5 full 15man teams, really only a couple of players on this list that I dont think are obviously not test players. also can't find room for some very good players... Regan King any good any more?

I think 12 was supposed to be Luke McAlister...

King is still pretty good, even though he's not first choice at Clermont. He's more of an impact sub nowadays. Laulala's still better.

I don't see how someone could mix up Nick Evans and Luke McAlister.

That's what happens when you only have five top-level pro teams with limited numbers of foreign players.

It was probably a case of "Oh McAlister could be 10, except Evans is 10... So we'll put Evans at first five, second five can then be McAlister" and then on that train of thought, just having Evans on the brain, and writing him down instead of McAlister.

Yep, meant McAlister. Nick Evans just won the Aviva Premiership and McAlister just kicked Toulouse to another Top 14 ***le, so I guess that was also on my mind.

I don't think the ABS have ever been scraping the bottom of the barrel. Their strength in depth in certain positions is crazy. They have about 20 wingers who would walk into any other international team.
