If the best players played 7's...

- Dagg

England

Croft
Rees
Guest
Youngs
Cipriani
Tait
Monye

Not too shabby...

That team would be ripped to pieces by the real England 7s.

Quite possibly, they're the specialists after all - but feel free to name me a better 7s team from the guys in and around the 15 a side England squads.

Probably starts with dropping Guest for a back tbh, I was just thinking of big quick units...

If the best players played 7s...that would mean Ed Fairhurst plays sevens...

I thought the original question was "if the best players played 7s".

Now if we were being serious, we'd never drop the specialists and maybe add in one or two who could probably play to a high level.

So for England, you'd forget the Cipriani media machine - Ben Gollings is the 7s fly half and 10 times the player Danny the ******** will ever be - then you bring in the great England sevens players (even if they're not [strike]particularly good[/strike] fashionable in XVs)... John Brake, Andy Vilk, Tom Varndell, Matthew Tait, Chris Mayor etc.

The only English players I'd like to have seen give it a go on the 7s circuit but never did would be Jason Robinson and Josh Lewsey. That said, bith would still struggle to cope with the difference.

Ben Gollings is one of the generals that I rate up their with Eric Rush and Waisale Serevi. Hes just a strong player whos done his country a great service and everytime he plays my team (SAMOA!!!) Im hoping he never gets the ball. If he was to miss out on a sevens tournament for someone like Cipriani I'd be gobsmacked.

1 - DJ Forbes (C)
2 - Tim Mikkleson
3 - Liam Messam
4 - Piri Weepu
5 - Dan Carter
6 - Tomasi Cama
7 - Cory Jane

8 - Victor Vito
9 - Sherwin Stowers
10 - Zac Guilford

Cory Jane would be a star in the sevens game!!! Guilford is a hard worker and would also be a real threat.

Cory Jane was a star in sevens for a number of years before he broke into the Super 14 - the way he reads the game so brilliantly on attack can largely be attributed to his sevens background.

Ha, yeah i know... should've written it differently. meant to be a star in the Dehli sevens games

Ive always wondered what would happen if a bunch of international props had a go at playing 7s ... yeah they would not handle pace in dfence but in attack they would tear a 7s team to bits and would be very very difficult to stop if they got momentum...the likes of the tongan for northaptons the atletic props i mean
Now there's a concept!

Gethin Jenkins
Sione Tongaw'a (Or however it's actually spelt)
Tau Filise
Tony Buckley

...Actually, I'm running out of them. I'd love to see a Wingers team versus a prop team, though.

For England, I'd go:

Croft
S Armitage
Rees

Care
Gollings
Tait
Strettle

If I'm not allowed Gollings then I'd go with Alex Goode.
Also any tight 5 team would have to contain Joe Marler. Fastest prop i've seen in ages.

My team's better...:p

Gethin Jenkins
Hika Elliott
Soane Tonga'huia

Mario Ledesma
Chabal

Radiki Samo
Schalk Brits

If you want to make it a front rowers only swap Chabal for Dane Coles (Wellington/Hurricanes) and Samo for Romain Terrain (Biarritz).

my NZ side

Liam Messam (C) - Why would you not select this top 3, great 7's players. Messam is the size of a forward and runs like a back. devaloped a Great Passing game this year.
Adam Thompson - huge workrate and good speed for his height.
Victor Vito - Good straight line ball runner and can attract defenders & offload.
Stephen Donald - just to **** everyone off. He'd do well i think, big, fast and can tackle very well, very high fitness level. Playmaker role.
Richard Kahui - has every skill in the book, great defence, suprising turn of speed. Can step, fend, offload, draw & Pass - whatever.
Isaia Toeava - Can Drift through tight spaces at high speed, doesn't need much room.
Israel Dagg - Sick skills, size & speed.
