IRB announce an unnamed player failed a World Cup drugs test

An unnamed player failed a drugs test during the Rugby World Cup, the International Rugby Board has revealed.

The player's identity has been withheld but the IRB confirmed he plays for a nation that failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition.​

The positive test was returned following a match in the final round of the pool phase.​

Banned painkiller? Doesn't sound too bad. He should be named and given a ban/fine if that is the procedure. Just not sure this news is anything significant. Probably a media beat-up.

As a cycling fan my judgement might be 'less sensitive' to news like this though

Most of the above were caused by one ordinary team. The World Cup itself was a well run success.

I dont even think that is thaat bad. I mean its a really poor lifesyle and rolemodel choice to do cocaine, but at least they aren't intentional drug cheats. It blew my mind when Wendell Sailor was banned indefinitely for a recreational drug, compared to the 4 game ban Shawne Merriman got for intentionally cheating with HGH.

I agree. Of course all illeagle drugs should be banned, and are banned by law, but there is little in my mind that seperates a recreational drug charge from an assult, and both should be handled by the legal system more so than the rugby system. Cheating through performance enhancing drugs however, is more of crime in a sporting sense than a legal sense, and should be punished heavily.

However if there are things like painkillers which are proven to be the cause, a fine is pretty reasonable, with perhaps a compulsory drugs education course to rub the fine in thick.
