Have to say, I'm very very surprised at that! Both at Marler being named captain (with his past discipline issues, him being away with England as much as Robshaw, and props rarely playing the full 80) and at Robshaw no longer being captain (I know the article mentions relieving pressure on him etc. but I'm still amazed!).

yeah, With Mike Brown, Nick Evans, Danny Care, Nick Eatser etc... i'm surprised they didn't go for them.

Maybe it's to reduce Robshaws workload ahead of the world cup & to give England more captain material options?

Might be Quins hoping that this might calm him down and be a more responsible player. Worked with Hartley....mostly

I thought he had overcome most of his discipline issues already. Dont hear much about him, just praise for his continuously improving performances.

Aside from that, maybe he's an influential figure at the club and yes maybe Robshaw is being given a break with all his England responsibilities.

Good shout.

Completely unexpected but potentially a very good call.

surprising indeed for such a young pup. PROP....for such a young prop. It's definitely the Mohawk. It inspired the coaches. Moe Jarler rocks it like the Saxons of old. It's historically proven they had crazy hairdos like that to intimidate their foes.

Pleased by this. I think it really is just for this season and Chris will be captain again after the RWC, but still its potentially a great move.

Marler is going to be at the club for a good few years to come, he's already at the heart of the team and as pointed out he's put the hot headedness of his first season behind him. Captaincy should, I hope, lead to him growing as a player and leader.

He's also actually not a surprising a choice as you might think. Brown and Care are a bit too lary to captain, Nev and Easter would maybe be safer options but they've both at a stage where they can't be expected to play every week if we want to keep them fit and firing. After them there aren't that many others, are other experienced guys are either a bit injury prone or wingers (not a position you can play as captain from that easily IMO). Everyone else is either way too young and inexperienced or don't stand out as a leader like Marler does. So while its a bit of a shock Joe is actually not that surprising when you think about who we have.

Is Joe potentially a one club player?

I get the feeling he might be - he seems very loyal.

Yeah I get that feeling as well, but wouldn't want to jinx it by saying I was sure!

He loves Quins, has been here a long time and played a lot of games (100+ caps remember, despite being 24). I can't imagine him leaving unless there was some very big changes at the club. Equally, despite being a very good prop I don't think he's yet big name enough to attract the big big money bids that might tempt him away.

He's contracted until summer 2016, by which point he'll be 26/27 and hopefully really blossoming. Maybe at that point he might be tempted away but I really can't imagine it.

Quins are going to have a strong front row this season..
1 Marler
2 Buchanan (if he can get fit)
3 Sinkler
