Modding sounds

Rigbt, can anyone point me in the direction of a turorial and some software so I can have a crack at changing the menu music?

Purely because the current songs are starting to grate and I'd like to start learning how to modding games; converting and installing an MP3 or two should be as good a place as any!!!
