new rugby movie

The website doesn't seem to want to load for me, damn this ancient dialup connection!

Heh, just watched a trailer for it on youtube here, could someone please tell me why they're doing the Haka? What a load of BS, call me crazy but I think only NZ should have any right to the Haka. Even if it's just a movie, I find it stupid and insulting to the people of New Zealand, how pathetic do you have to be to use something of a culture not your own?

Tonga, Samoa also do it... it could be that they are from oceania so use your sense.

But with Tonga and Samoa being Polynesian peoples, I am sure they do their own cultural variation of what the Haka is to the peoples of New Zealand. I have never seen Samoa play so I can't speak first hand but I will do a little bit of reading...

*browses the net*

Well, Samoan don't perform Ka Mate or Kapa O Pango, but their own traditional dance called Siva Tau which is traditionally a Samoan tribal challenge.

That is much different than for example a group of white Americans doing the Haka before a rugby game, IMO. It's just as silly to me as a White european doing a traditional African tribal dance or a Black person doing a Native American rain dance. More people these days need to embrace their own culture and traditions and stop trying to adopt / steal from other peoples because they're too lazy to look into their own. To me, that goes for all groups of people. It's one thing to admire and respect another culture, it's another to try adopt it as your own.

These are just my opinions, disagree if you want.

What im saying is it might be based in new zealand :P.

sorry if i sounded harsh.

Oh God it looks terrible. :| Is it just me or wasn't this meant to star Matt Damon and be based around the Springbok 1995 World Cup side?

Well, the only star actor here is Sean Astin.... well, the only actor I know here is Sean Astin, at least. Gah, I think I'll give this one a miss.

Well no, I read up on the movie just not from it's official website. It's just a stupid cliche sports drama about some kid from Arizona (USA) who gets hit with a DUI and ends up in a boys home, plays rugby... eventually against his dad. Typical hollywood rubbish... but maybe, just maybe it can interest more people in the great sport of Rugby Union.

This story kinda reminds me of a mixture of Gridiron Gang and The Longest Yard, so unoriginal.

This just looks like ANY other sporting drama. Just replace basketball/soccor/football/tennis with rugby and we have Forever Strong. <_<

ok my bad, i apologize.[/b]

I'm not upset with you or anything man, no need to apologize for anything you've said. I hope I didn't come off as like I had any problem with you or your posts, because I really had no intention of that... man you gotta hate the internet sometimes. Comments and statements can be taken so out of context sometimes, I should work on how I come across whilst I type on the net from now on.

well along with Forever Strong another rugby movie has seen the light of sun! Thats good, no not good but amazing!
This is the second "most" movie porject I have encountered with rugby life (instead of documentals of course)
Also the RWC 2007 was the recorded as the mostly crowded and mostly watched by TV Rugby World Cup ever played!
I am saying this, because I think Rugby is rising up with the popularity among the humans all across the world, or "universe" as you like it
Don't you think so? I think soon Rugby will pick up so many fans that no stadium will "pool" with these numbers!
For example this is the case in my country Georgia and not only
(I say my country because the football was the leading sport of our society till now)
Cheers!!!!!!!!

Yeah!!!! Me and Georgia together love rugby

Why the hell is the bloke wearing a Scotland jersey?
Surely it would have been more interesting if they HADN'T ripped a nation's jersey and made their own.
I couldn't force myself to sit through the trailer to be honest, I got about 3/4 of the way through.

WHERE IS MY MORGAN FREEMAN + MATT DAMON!

Look, the first time something is done, its usually terrible. I think we should give the people who came up with the movie a round of applause. And hopefully, the next (IF) couple of rugby movies will be better. And hopefully, help to capture the imagination of the Yanks.

Once the Yanks get hold of it, then the rest of the world will emulate. Hopefully.

I just happened to notice that the main star was wearign a 12 jersey. Does that mean the Americans think of that as the glamour position? Just like how QBs and RBs are always the main stars in gridiron movies.. Hmmm.

Now does anyone know if this is going to be released in Singapore?

Well in the very first scene I saw he was wearing a 14 jersey, and thought "That'd be right, all the pride goes to the wingers".
I didn't pay attention after that.

We all know that sooner or later all of us will see it... :/

I think, if anything, it's really good that it's based in the USA. Really good publicity for the sport. The only way Americans notice anything anyway is when it's on TV... It will probably be a "B" grade movie, but like i said, it's good for the game.

International teams would have been cooler i think... Aspiring to be the best at an unknown American local team aint really an aspiration is it?

i think there's another movie coming out with morgan freeman and matt damon that revolves around the political situation in South African when they won the world cup the first time. i read something on it somewhere, but neither remember the name of the movie nor the website i read it (a lot of help, i know)..

and no, americans dont think 12 is a glory position.. actually we think of it as least 'glorious' of the backline.. i think 10 is most widely seen as THE position.. 12 is the hard runner/tackler/beater who may not have the hands, brains or speed of the rest of the line..

saw the previews, looks almost vomit-inducing, but will still probably see it just because it's about rugby and i can see how they (likely incorrectly) portray it. then i can come on here and talk about how the bloody yanks should have aborted the project before any bit of film was stained with its existence with the rest of you..
