Mills gets place ahead of Franklin in Champions Trophy team
Kyle Mills headed off the challenge from James Franklin for the only really contentious spot in the New Zealand team for the ICC Champions Trophy in England next month.
Mills, who was injured in the third Test of the tour of England, has passed a fitness test, along with Chris Cairns and Daryl Tuffey.
Coach John Bracewell said: “Kyle Mills retains his position in the squad despite a strong challenge from James Franklin who had come into the Black Caps’ ODI squad in England after Mills was injured just before the start of the tournament.
“Mills has served the Black Caps well during his ODI career to date and offers just a little bit more flexibility than Franklin as regards the roles he plays as part of the bowling unit,†Bracewell said.

“The squad contains no real surprises. These players have performed well during the past nine months. The nucleus of this squad plays well as a team and has the class required to continue winning at this level,†Bracewell said.
New Zealand, who enjoy a No 2 ranking in the world one-day rankings, have left no stone unturned in their preparation for the tournament which has a vital game against Australia as a possible impediment to its advance to the semi-finals.
“We are positive about going into the championship as the number two ODI side in the world but understand that we have a tough task ahead if we are to beat the number one ranked side, Australia, in our second match.â€
“We have organised a good build up for the tournament and should be well prepared for the tournament matches,†Bracewell said.
The Black Caps leave for England on August 29 and will be based at Taunton in Somerset until September 5, where they will play one-day matches against Somerset and a Somerset/Gloucestershire combined XI. The Black Caps will then play Sri Lanka on September 8 in a further warm-up match.
The Black Caps play the USA in their opening pool match on September 10 and then have a further warm up match against Surrey on September 13 before meeting Australia in the crunch game on September 16 at The Oval.
