Nigel Davies sacked

Sad for him - always seemed like a decent guy, and he has lost his job after all.

Does seem necessary though... I think their coaching staff needs an overhaul - I can't believe everyone else was doing a fantastic job either...

yeah, sad for Davies as i like him, but they've been a shambles and a club like gloucester with their resources should be pushing play off places.

The body language of the Glos players as compared with that of the Worcester players says a lot.

They looked a hell of a lot better under redpath to be honest. I think davies underestimated the need for a solid pack in the AP a bit naive. Redpath's team still had the old work horses like ,Qera in his peak,James,Brown, Hamilton, Buxton, Hazel and then Davies hasn't brought in anybody. Just a loose carrying tongan, and relied on the academy for the rest... A bit like his days with the Scarlets. He brought ibm hibbard and afoa too late. They still miss a proper enforcer at lock, stooke is too young

And yes i do like gloucester

Edit:
P.s I think Davies is a great attack coach, we've seen what he did with the scarlets (who to be honest weren't being tested in pro 12 forwards wise the way gloucester have been) and gloucester in glimpses. But he's possibly a bit too naive for head coach.

I think if Gloucester could bring in Jamie Joseph from the Highlanders he would be a great fit. His teams always play fast attacking rugby but with real intensity in the forwards as well.

He ain't going to get a look in with the Allblacks with Blackadder being pals with the NZRU so he should give Europe a go...

Mark Hammet is a no go though. It would be quite fitting if Cardiff if signed him up :p

Shame for Nigel but not a surprising move really Gloucester from last season competitive to Gloucester this season is dramatic in decline . They have added some real quality too in Kvesic . Can't get my head around what's happened tbh . I'd be interested to know what people think are the reasons for the decline ?

Incredibly torn on this.

I rate Nigel Davies, I really do. I think the impact he made on Gloucester upon his arrival was plain to see, and he started to get something good out of the players. He talked about long-term plans, and they were very convincing words. His downfall ultimately was his loyalty to the rest of his coaching team (presuming he had control over the appointments). I think that had he set some expectations on the rest of his staff, and replaced them where necessary, then Gloucester would be doing a lot better, and he would still have his job. I wanted to see Davies in a new coaching team.

An entire coaching overhaul is needed anyway, and appears to be taking place. Paul Moriarty (defence coach) is reported to be leaving this season too. I wonder where this might leave Stanley (forwards) and Tindall (backs).

Trevor Woodman has been a fantastic acquisition and should at the very least retain his scrum coach role. Reminds me of Rowntree in that he's one of the few faces to come out of this season with a positive reputation. Like Rowntree, I'd be curious to see whether he has the coaching pedigree to move onto a higher role, as a forwards (and scrum) coach. Alex Brown may have a good shot at being kept too. He's been responsible for the lineout and scouting, and both have functioned very well under him.

I'd definitely be interested in seeing Woodman take on a bit more responsibility - seems like he'd be able to instill a strong culture if nothing else.

According to the Citizen, the shortlist to replace Nigel is:

Nick Mallett (club's first preference)
Lyn Jones
Kingsley Jones
Dean Richards (doubt it, Ryan Walkinshaw has already said that he wouldn't want him as a Gloucester coach)
Mike Tindall / Trevor Woodman (presuming the Citizen knows something that we don't, then that must mean Tindall and Woodman are at least going to keep their coaching roles that they already have)

If I ran the club, I'd go after Baxter. Knows the English game, great achievements, sets the right culture, and is probably limited in what he can achieve with the finance available to him at the Chiefs.

I find it hard to belive that Nick Mallett would come to Gloucester - why is it when ever a coaching job becomes available Nick Mallett is the first person on the list?

I think your best chance is Woodman backed up by Tindall.

Can't see Mallett, lyn Jones or Richards going glous certainly not Mallett or Richards.

Baxter certainly won't go to glous he building up his own team with a long term view @ exeter

Has Mark anscombe been confirmed to be going anywhere yet.

France job will be up for grabs next year if he wants it...

Well Mallett has been out of the game for some time now. I think it would be a decent opportunity for him to get back in.

Kingsley Jones
He's a decent forwards coach but terrible anything higher. Ran us into the ground, then after we traded Head Coaches with Russia (Dimes for Kingsley) he then ran Russia into the ground as well, after Dimes built them into the strongest side they'd ever been.

Is he looking to get back into it? he seems quite happy doing analysis for Super Sports and the odd bit of consultancy here and there. I think if he takes a coaching job it will be at Super XV international level.

still stranger things have happened.

That's a pretty bleak looking list to be honest...

Mallet would obviously be great - but I can't see that happening.

The rest - erm....

Woodman taking over would be interesting. If he could take over as a hands-on DOR/forwards coach that could have some legs in it if he could hire some decent specialists.
As I say - I think he might be quite good at instilling a culture. I'm not sure whether Tinds is actually any good or whether he's just part of the furniture there...?

Baxter isn't going anywhere btw - he owns and runs a farm in Devon which he would not be able to do from any other club.

I understand the reasoning, but the timing seems slightly odd to me: They've finally let him assemble the squad he wants and given him the facilities he felt he needs. Surely you'd give him at least until Christmas for some sense of improvement?

Sacking Paul Moriarty totally makes sense though.

I'm not sure how much of the squad he's really assembled though...?

The core of the current team has been there since before he turned up.
The big name signings were as a result of the failings of the squad - not a preemptive move - and I think it was mainly instigated by Walkinshaw.

That's fair, though I'd have thought Davies would have some input as to where the extra player funds were spent.
