Pretty arbitrary criteria as Ashman was born in Canada (but moved to the North as a baby) and Ford born in the North but started his rugby at Leicester so it's not really by birth or by academy

Why?
The Navy are his primary employers; and he's on loan to the rugby club - just like the previous serving personnel who play professionally (eg Rokodugini or McNally at Bath)

IIRC Josh Lewsey resigned his commission because of precisely this.
