Questions reference Rugby Team Manager 2015

One thing I like about Football Manager (which has the luxury of a massive team of developers and guaranteed profitability) is that the other teams feel as though they are also making tactical decisions, countering strategies, struggling to develop players and facilities etc. Each computer controlled club feels real and almost as though it is in fact a case of a massive multi player tournament with a human controlling each team, when in fact I'm the only human playing!

I'd love it if the RUTM series developed a more strategic, varied and tactical approach in terms of the gameplay, as sometimes it feels a little like I just have to beat the game and that the computer doesn't react using similar tactical tools to the ones I have at my disposal.

Hope that isn't too convoluted? Keep up the work and stay passionate!!

PS I'm guessing you are waiting for potential post RWC signings to be confirmed before releasing any update? Rumours suggest Schalk Burger might play in England? I'm working in the UK till September so that would be cool.

Does nationality have any effect on the quality of a youth player, or are the facilities of the club in question the sole determinant? Eg are youth players from NZ SA and Aus slightly better than other Tier 1 team's youth players?

It would be nice if player regeneration were to be looked at a bit with more random elements. Good youth facilities seem to guarantee quality young players, whereas I think it should only slightly improve the chances of getting good players. There are probably too many amazing players being churned out too in my opinion. What I like about Football Manager is that some years a top club doesn't produce quality youngsters despite all the facilities and investment, whilst occasionally a really small team can unearth a legend.

I used to play the older versions but I can't remember. Is it possible to re-train a players primary or secondary position if yes how? I have found some English guys that are wrong and I want to fix them so I can play the team I want

I'd actually given up on ever finding a GOOD rugby management game, but I'm actually really enjoying this. Basically it's not Football Manager but it's a fantastic first effort, assuming it is a first effort because it basically Pro Rugby Manager remade to a large degree, but it's simply vastly improved in most areas.

The game seems pretty basic though:
1) Buy a 5 star agent!
2) sack all your coaches / staff and replace them with 5 star coaches - burns up your £2m budget! Then get a coaching set up similar to this:
With regards to the Dev Pot coaches, try and get their positions, to have 2 of them forwards and 2 of them as backs. Lock, Flankers and Wingers are very useful as you have 2 of each type on a 15 man team so it gives you a better spread.

3) stick all the players in your squad below national level on the transfer list, and all your foreign players.
4) buy the final Stadium improvement on the facilities screen to increase revenue by 15% (it pays for itself).
5) dump all the colts below national standard and scout for new ones.
6) pick your pre-season friendlies, had Zebre / Treviso / Bath and Toulon at home this season =)

I am enjoying the sound effects from Star Trek Birth of the Federation though, nice to hear them again.

Lots of things to fix on the game, but still it's a fantastic first effort by any standards.

There are some huge problems that occur though as you progress further into the game, firstly you have far too many players bearing in mind you don't need to rotate anyone, and injuries and suspensions are rare so at most you need 25 players in a squad. International periods are also not really a problem, because at that point I simply sign the weakest players I can, with stars or personality traits, and stick them on the bench, then sell them again as soon as the internationals come back.

As a result of this if you simply sell off the excess players you have millions in the bank. Using this money you can easily upgrade your facilities, if you have a successful first season then your facilities are basically fully upgraded going into the early part of the second season. I'm not sure if this is a part of the game or not, but maybe in future versions of the game, each season technology could advance in a certain area, so everyone loses one star of a random facility area, meaning that once your fully upgraded that part of the game still requires investment.

Secondly a glaring problem, is if you hire 4 x Dev Pot (developing potential) coaches, as this gives you 100% training quality at the bottom of the Training / players screen.

The players stay in the Colts for between 1 and 2 years, depending on weather their aged 17 or 18. As they train over the course of the season the Grey bar on the Contracts / Colts contracts screen increases, as the player trains and plays. I also found it seems to help if a particular Dev Pot coach specialises in a position that any players also in that position seem to get a boost in their education.
Going back to what I about facilities, the problem is once you upgrade everything and hire better coaches you churn out Colt level players that are vastly better than whats in your team.

I think you can see what basically happens by the second season, you pushing through 12 young players a season that are better than whats in your squad. So you end up like this (basically 7 of my first 15 are now kids and 2 of my subs are also kids, bearing in mind this does not include World Class level players as their still in the academy!):

Looking at my team half of them are 18/19 years old and have already superseded my original squad, they have been sold off, hence why I have so much money by season three. Not only that but I just wiped the floor with Toulon at home by 30-0, which really shouldn't be happening considering it's the worlds most expensive team against a load of Swansea lads who are aged between 18/20!

Like I said a fantastic first effort for the game, but nationalities need to be sorted out and also the junior sections, because at the moment, anyone with half a brain by the third season has an invincible team.

Thanks for the great post, we will be certainly taking all your comments on board.
We are all so pleased to read that you really like the game.
You may now enjoy playing on a harder mode, or perhaps play with a lower league team and see if you can get promoted to the top. That's where the challenge is possibly now for you.

Thanks very much, I'm probably going to try and play in France next as Welsh teams don't get promoted or relegated from the Pro12. I'd forgotten about the difficulty level that might be what I'm doing wrong.
The wage cap also kills you, because by season three you basically need to abandon your Academy squad and hire a load of amateur level players to reduce wages, so you have decent money available to retain your developed world class players.

Into season four now and the main team is still improving.

Hi Dave,

Not sure if this is the right place to put it but I need help. I cannot seem to be able to play any games. Whenever it comes to game day I play the colts and the academy games on Result Only then the game seems to skip the senior team game and sends me an email with the match result.

Am I missing something or is this a bug?

Jack

Hi Jack

It sounds like you may have assigned an assistant to your main squad and need to un-assign him.

On the left toolbar navigate to, Club - Assistants.

Highlight the assistant in the top left box.
Click on the unassign button near the top toolbar.

I hope this is helpful.

Kind Regards

I have downloaded the game today, and find a very disappointing bug which renders the game unplayable.

In both the Nations Cup and normal game mode, my players' Match Energy degrades at a ridiculous rate. By half time, my forwards are at about 20-30. By 60 minutes into the game, they are at 0. My backs are around 70-80, even after doing very little. Even when I am largely in possession, so my forwards are not even having to put tackles in- they're just needed at the breakdown.

It is impossible to play the game like this, as I'm guaranteed to lose all matches as by 50-60 minutes, the opposition run in try after try as I essentially have a non-existent defence.

Has anybody else experienced this and if so, is there a workaround/patch? I'm not holding out much hope for the patch, having downloaded the game today, I would think it is as up-to-date as possible.

Using Blitz Defence would not make players exhausted to the point of '0'. The lowest energy should fall is to around 40-50 and that would be horrendously fatiguing. It's very unrealistic, particularly when in real life teams like Wales play Blitz Defence for pretty much 80 minutes...

That must be the reason SA always beat us by such huge margins...

Right, I have played my first 3 games (2 friendlies and 1 league game) with Clermont.

I am still struggling a bit to understand how to have an impact on the game which is being played in front of my eyes, but it looks like I set the tactics correctly as I won all 3 games comfortably (I am playing in easy mode, which may explain the reason for this).

What I notice is that there is no competition at the breakdown until the forwards finally arrive. This would be nice to change. First of all, the forwards take forever to join the breakdown, when really, at least the backrow should be following the ball and be there first. In addition, the locks and front row should be spread on the field (except after a set piece) to support. Finally, and more importantly, it would be nice to see the backs sticking their necks in the rucks, this is more and more the case in modern rugby, and this could allow for quick turn-around and nice break away tries (either on the counter-attack, if there is a turn-over, or in the continuity of the original move).

This would require a major reshuffling of the Match Engine I suspect, but would really add to the game.

As a consequence, players skills would need to be reviewed. Today, backs have no forward skills, and forwards have no back skills. However, in real life, it is impossible to have a back who doesn't know how to ruck, or has no strength/aggressiveness or power and to have forwards who don't know how to pass for example. Skills may be weaker, like in the 40-60s, but seeing these skills down in the 10-25 seems very unrealistic to me.

And to prove my point, I was ready that, before the European Cup quarter final, the best ball pilferer in the rucks was Racing Metro center Chavancy and not, for example, Steffon Armitage!

With regards to the management of the game, I find that money comes in too easily. This may again be due to the fact that I am playing on the "easy" mode so far.
