I work for Network Rail and recently came across the fact that there is a Railway rugby team, side predominantly based down in the South East. Anyway I made contact with them expressing an interest in playing as and when I could.

I got talking to the bloke who runs it and we came up with the idea of hosting a charity game, North v South the ultimate grudge match. I have been charged with the task of raising the Northern team for the fixture in February which will raise funds for this year’s Network Rail's chosen charity, Clic Sergeant.

Currently I have 11-12 players all known to me within the Railway Industry. I am just posting this to find out if any of you work or know of anyone who does in the Railway Industry and would like to be involved, please personal message me if you have any details.

Also if the team is successful we will defiantly be trying to arrange some additional exhibition games.

Thanks

Hi mate, the question is would you represent the North or South?

You are more than welcome to get involved the game this year (well next in Feb) will be played in York, would you still be up for it?

If you go by the RFU's definition, Birmingham is in the north (unless a level transfer is required) - level 4 Birmingham based teams play in National 2 North, level 5 teams play in National 3 Midlands, which (along with National 3 North) feeds National 2 North.

To me Birmingham is not in the North, or South for that matter it is in Mercia, the midlands. The Northern counties are Yorkshire, Lancashire / (maybe Chesire) upwards. In saying that though if people from the Midlands would prefer to represent the North who could blame them ;).

To you maybe. I was explaining how the RFU see it. If Cheshire is the most southerly county in the north, the south by definition includes Lincs, Notts and Derbyshire and dwarfs the north by any measure you chose to apply! By your logic, the south would cut off at maybe Wiltshire, leaving about half the country stuck in no man's land in the middle! As ceremonial counties are irrelevant to you, it should be easy enough to find out the latitudinal north / south mid point England - players north of there, players south of there are southern.

I'd come up to York. I know a few of the guys in the NR office up there. When you know a date let me know and I'll make sure I'm around.

You may be in need of a coach. There's some northern bloke called Lancaster who may be looking for employment soon!
