Now we've been able to answer a few questions on RC2006, I thought it might be worth posting up a quick background on what we've tried to do with the game and what our intentions were.
RC2006 is definitely the spiritual successor to WCR. Acclaim's insolvency meant that the WCR IP was traded off in the bankruptcy courts so is effectively washed out now, so we had to have a new name.
WCR was a good game, one we were very proud of. It did what is said on the tin! Almost anyone could pick it up and have a game of rugby. It was fluid and fast and fun. It was not a rugby simulation by any means and did not attempt to be.
RC2006 is based on the same fluid game engine but we have added some extra features and depth. Forward play was non-existent in WCR, but we have added broken tackles, so now you can grind out those hard yards up the middle with the fatties.
We like the 'big hit' mechanic (whether it's realistic or not) as it is a means of spilling the ball loose, but we have made it more measurable. If your wing tries to big hit a forward now, he just bounces off.
The graphics in WCR were fun but they did not appeal to the hardcore rugby community. We have kept the same vibrancy but have moved to a more realistic look for RC2006. Everything is a little more realistic.
We have added squad depth. You manage/choose your team prior to kick-off and can bring on replacements during the match. Players get injured and have their stats reduced.
We have kept the burst sprint mechanic but have altered it slightly. The backs use the sprint as normal ie. it's the afterburner. The forwards use the sprint to crash through tackles.
The career mode is probably the most extensive addition to the game. You take over a custom team and have to play through the seasons. Playing matches and training games increase the stats of your players. You can also buy and sell players as the season progresses. It's a pretty cool game mode and probably took the most effort to design and include of any of the new features.
So RC2006 is the next stage on from WCR. We built on what people liked, but have changed quite a lot. I would say that RC2006 is still not a simulation of rugby and I make no apologies for that. It is still a game based on rugby union. However, it looks and plays in a more realistic fashion.
There you go ... just a taster.
