RFU bet £250k on England to win the WC

The RFU have placed a huge £250,000 bet on England winning the Rugby World Cup later this year, according to a report in the Guardian.

However, they have not placed the bet because they are so confident of the team's success, but rather as "insurance" against bonuses that would be owed to the players if they got that far.

I dunno, this could actually be true. It could show the England team that the RFU have total belief they can lift the Webb Ellis once again!

I doubt the entire amount is on winning. They probably have part of it kicking in if they can reach the Semi's. I think I read something suggesting that recently.

It makes sense.

If England don't reach the semis, then the players get no bonuses and the RFU is £250k out of pocket on a lost bet.

If England do make the semis, then the RFU has to pay out £2m+ to the players and staff in bonuses. So they'll be a considerable amount out of pocket. But they'll have won their bet and made it all back.

Basically, they know they'll lose money either way, but 250k is a drop in the ocean compared to 2m+
