Romanian Rugby

hehe we posted in about the same time ;)

Is good that Timisoara plays on the biggest stadium in the area but it would be much better to have their own stadium suited for such crowds; It looks just odd. Bad news is that Timisoara mayor declared that a solution to allow RCM Timisoara to have their own rugby stadium won't be found anytime soon.

The Wolves lineup for this match looks like a crazy experiment. Most of the players from last week were rotated, there are many who lack experience at this level (Neagu, Vasiliu, etc) and others are played out of position (Van Heerden, Samoa, Jantjies).

I've heard that the pitch on Arcul de Triumf has been replanted and should be in good condition this weekend but the weather forecast is bad, with rain today and tomorrow and cold temperature on match day.

Apparently, TVR is in talks to show the match live, they were waiting for the final response today (the chances are said to be slim but we can only hope).

Interesting stats for Pristavita - good tackling for a prop and he's second in the "defenders beaten" top as well.

Some nice attacking moves from Timisoara against the Saracens but they didn't defend very well, the first Saracens try looks soft. Very dominant scrum from Timisoara.

Yes, their defense looks very disorganised and too narrow for my liking. Still, I can understand the reason of such a narrow defense if the players would press more for the ball but they didn't; in fact, some tries of Baia Mare in Cup game come from such defensive mistakes.

I suspect that they are missing Fercu a lot (if he was the one who coordinating the defense) or Heikell is trying to change the defensive system.

Stade Français named a strong team to face the Wolves

1. Sakaria Taulafo
2. Zurab Zhvania

5. Paul Gabrillagues
6. Matthieu Ugena
7. Mathieu De Giovanni
8. Nicolas Garrault
9. Julien Tomas
10. Morné Steyn
11. Digby Ioane
12. Jonathan Danty
13. Geoffrey Doumayrou (c)
14. Montana Danty
15. Benjamin Dumas

16. Dany Priso, 17. Adrian Oleon, 18. , 19. Julien Nibert, 20. Pierre Rabadan,

It will be exciting to watch players like Morne Steyn or Digby Ioane live tomorrow on Arcul de Triumf. Hopefully the weak Wolves lineup will not be embarassed by this Stade Francais team.

Romania U19 will also play these days in the European Championships, the first match is again vs Spain this Sunday. A really tough draw for the Oaklings, since Spain's youth teams include a lot of foreign players are are usually very strong. Here's the U19 squad that travelled to Portugal: Alexandru Ion Savin (LPS Focsani), Bogdan Gabriel Enache (CSA CSS Steaua), Tudor Gabriel Butnariu (CSS Unirea Iasi), Norbert Sorin Balin (CSS Baia Mare), Cosmin Gabriel Manole (CS Dinamo), Ciprian Ionut Lucaci (CSS Gura Humorului), Andrei Iurea (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Adrian Motoc (CSA CSS Steaua), Marian Alexandru Soana (CSA CSS Steaua), Bogdan Doroftei (CSS Barlad), Jean Marian Don (CSM Olimpia Bucuresti), Marian Dumitru Nita (CS Navodari), Cristi Boboc (CT TV Dunarea), Alin Costinel Ghiarasim (CSA CSS Steaua), Alexandru Neculai Palii (CSM Baia Mare), Leonard Marian Iancu (CT Dinicu Golescu), Stelian Cristian Ureche (CSA CSS Steaua), Ovidiu Iulian Butoeru (CSU Cluj), Andrei Catalin Neacsu (CSA CSS Steaua), George Adrian Iacob (CS Dinamo), Dumitru Papaiane (CS Navodari), Daniel Vladut Zaharia (CSS Barlad), Adrian Narcis Bors (CSS Unirea Iasi), Eduard Bencea (CSA CSS Steaua), Sabin Florin Stratila (RCJ Farul Constanta), Remus Mihai Zaharescu (CS Stiinta Petrosani).

One of these U19 players might be called by Lynn Howells to play for the senior squad in the November tests, I suspect it's fullback Sabin Stratila.

Bucharest Wolves 9-13 Stade Français

Bucharest :
3 penalties (Florin Vlaicu)

Stade Français :
1 try (Digby Ioane)
1 conversion (Morne Steyn)
2 penalties (Morne Steyn)

Not a bad result for the Wolves, who got a bonus point against a good opponent. I'm sure they would have won today if a few more of the better players in the league would have been available for selection, it was a close affair.

The Wolves defended well and the only try conceded was when they had one man in the bin at the end of the first half. The home front row was very dominant, winning most scrums against the head (the unexperienced Silviu Vasiliu did very well). Lineouts were awful for both teams, I think most balls were won against the throw. The match became a mess in the second half, due to the snow.

The attendance was low (maybe 500 people?) because of the weather. Here are two pics I've made with the conditions during the match:

Romanian Cup quarterfinal results:
CSM Bucuresti -Steaua 19-18 (so the Cup holders are out)
Baia Mare - U Cluj 29-7
RCM Timisoara - Poli Iasi 123-0
Dinamo - Farul Constanta 30-18

On Friday there will be a Halloween show match between amateur rugby team Bucharest Harlequins and Bucharest Rebels (Romanian American football champions) on the Arcul de Triumf Stadium. They will play one half with rugby rules and the other with American football rules. The event will also be a fundraiser for former Oaks player Petre Mitu, who has a very serious illness.

Crocket, did Paulica Ion play well for Perpignan in Pro D2 so far?

Romanian Cup semifinals draw:
Baia Mare vs CSM Bucuresti
RCM Timisoara vs Dinamo

Both matches will be played on Sunday on the Ghencea Stadium in Bucharest, the first one will be live on TVR2. I'm happy with this draw, it would have been unfair to have a premature Baia Mare - Timisoara match in the semifinals. The Cup finals will take place on November 29 on Cluj Arena.

I am not going so often to the stadium since they are ProD2 but Perpignan's scrum is better than last year.
Paulica Ion became a regular starter since Jgenti left the club and he is better than last year each time I saw him. But ProD2 is not Top14 ;)
