US international centre Andrew Suniula, who played for London Wasps last year, signs for CSM Bucharest

It seem the club also signed Samoan prop Hiroshi Tea
30 years old, 5 caps for Samoa, including a test against All Blacks in 2008
He played for various clubs around the world including Rotherham Titans (England), L'Aquila (Italy) and Wests Rugby (Australia)

I also think fijian international fly half Jonetani Ralulu signed to CSM but I'm not sure

Hi guys, yes CSM looking very strong with everything they have implemented for this season. To confirm the foreign players new to Romania: Hero Tea prop, Junior Taavili No.8/lock, Alfie Paea 12/13, Andrew Suniula 12/13, Jonetani Ralulu from Farul..

Luke Samoa has re-signed with Baia Mare after a long dispute.

Wow, I did not expect us to lose to Russia. This is an unnaceptable result, even if there can be many excuses like key players missing and the Russian dirty tactics (3 coaches denied visa, late change of venue). Congrats to the Russian players for the win, I didn't think they can do it.

The defeat changes little, the direct match between Romania and Georgia will still decide the winner of the competition. Perhaps this setback is good to show the issues in the Romanian game and actually help us prepare better for the RWC. Overconfidence was also an issue, the Oaks refused to kick many prenalties from good positions that could have secured a win in Krasnodar.

CSM looks strong indeed, I heard they might also sign Fijian centre Narukutabua Ratu Naisa (he has played for Farul Constanta in the past). But it will be hard to aseemble a team from so many new players. I hope they do well, the rise of a powerful Bucharest club would be great for the Superliga and might persuade the City Hall to invest more in the sport.

Dinamo will have a squad of 32 players this season, 6 of them are new transfers. Three names have been announced so far:
- centre Silviu Budileanu (ex-CSM Bucuresti)
- Tongan lock Tevita Senituli Iketau (capped by Tonga 7s)
- flanker Dragos Doru (ex-Steaua, capped by Romania U19)

Dinamo has just returned from a training camp in a mountain resort and will play a friendly match against Steaua on Friday.

Moldovan news:
- according to the Moldovan players, their national team was completely robbed by the referee in their defeat against Netherlands. They claim that no less than six Moldovan legitimate tries were not awarded by the ref.
- Moldovan international flanker Nicolae Purcel has signed for RCM Galati (Romanian second division).

Do you know if Paula Kata and Holoi'a stays at Dinamo? I liked these players, especially Holoi'a

Wow, 6 unallowed tries that's incredible! Also brothers Cobilas, Mahu, Arhip played for their clubs last week... and Felston wasn't called up...

No idea if those players are still at the club. Dinamo has always been the worst Superliga club at releasing information about their team. Anyway, here are their other 3 new recruits:
- scrum half Tudorel Bratu (ex-CSM Bucuresti)
- fly half Cristian Onofrei (ex-CSM Bucuresti)
- prop Gabriel Cosmin Manole (promoted from their own academy, capped by Romania U19)

Dinamo lacked a good kicker last season so Bratu and Onofrei (both decent with the boot) seem to be good transfers. Regarding the Moldovan claims, I'd be curious to hear the opinion of a neutral observer at the match. If their version is true, that's an insane robbery.

U Cluj - Poli Iasi 62-15 (according to another source the final score was 70-13) in a friendly match played today.

Three additional signings at Cluj:
- French centre Mohamed Belguidoum (has played last season for Albi in Pro D2)
- Serbian international hooker Istok Totic (he was on trial at the club)
- fly half Ovidiu Melniciuc (Stiinta Petrosani, capped by Romania U19 and top points scorer of the second division last season)

The Romanian U19 squad that will tour Canada and play two tests against the hosts: Ciprian Lucaci (CSS Gura Humorului), Marius Lungu (CSA CSS Steaua), Mihai Oprea (CSA CSS Steaua), Ovidiu Cojocaru (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Cristian Patrascan (CSA CSS Steaua), Andrei Toader (CSS Barlad), Andrei Iurea (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Octavian Popa (CSS CSA Steaua), Alexandru Tiganus (CSA CSS Steaua), Alin Ghiarasim (CSA CSS Steaua), Alexandru Cozma (CS Cleopatra Constanta), George Tatarus (LPS Focsani), Cristian Stratila (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Adrian Motoc (CSA CSS Steaua), George Croitoru (CSM Bucuresti), Sebastian Agapie (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Ionel Melinte (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Marian Lupu (CSS Gura Humorului), Raoul Paxaman (CSA CSS Steaua), Eduard Bencea (CSA CSS Steaua), Florin Popa (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Mihai Melnicov (CSA CSS Steaua), Ionut Balaban (CSS Barlad), Adrian Negoita (CSA CSS Steaua), Alexandru Padureanu (CSA CSS Steaua), Claudiu Trandafir (CSA CSS Steaua).

After an emergency landing in Iceland, the Little Oaks missed the connection flight and arrived in Victoria later in three separate planes.

Meanwhile, Romania U18 will play Scotland U17 twice in Edinburgh: Andrei Cretu (CSO Pantelimon), Alin Davidoaea (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Silviu Gradinaru (RC Grivita), Alin Haidau (CSS Unirea Iasi), Claudiu Marzac (RCM Timisoara), Iulian Radu (CT Dinicu Golescu), Marius Iftimiciuc (CSS Unirea Iasi), Mihai Matei (CSM Baia Mare), Damian Ispas (CSA CSS Steaua), Mihnea Panzaru (RCM Timisoara), Filip Serban (CSM Olimpia), Andrei Chiru (CSO Pantelimon), Cristian Chirica (CSS Barlad), Mihai Ilie (CSS Unirea Iasi), Madalin Mihalache (CS Tomitanii Constanta), Dragos Burlacu (CS Tomitanii Constanta), Razvan Lolea (CSO Pantelimon), Stefan Cucos (CSS Barlad), Mihai Lamboiu (CS Tomitanii Constanta), Mircea Mavrodin (CSO Pantelimon), Catalin Miscoci (CS Tomitanii Constanta), Ionut Pantea (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Iulian Nistor (CSA CSS Steaua), Marius Simionescu (CSS Unirea Iasi), Tudor Boldor (CS Tomitanii Constanta).

In a friendly match, CS Manastur (Romanian 3rd division) - Budapest Exiles (Hungary 1st division) 38-0. The tests between Superliga teams scheduled for this weekened were cancelled due to the unexpected snow storms on Friday.

I heard somewhere that the Romanian rugby clubs in the Liga has budgets of around 4 million euros, that is a very high amount. Even for clubs in Scotland and Ireland!. Is this for all the clubs or just the top 2-3 competing clubs? Im asking because I heard else where that some where highly professional while others semi-pro. If that is true, how much are those clubs operating on?

None of the Superliga clubs have that much but one of the top ones was said to have 2 million EUR per year.

All the Superliga clubs are fully pro, I would guess their budgets are between 500k and 1 million euros. I've read one article claiming that the minimum Superliga budget was 1 million but probably the weaker clubs operate with less.

Who are the owners of these clubs? Many Top 14 clubs have a "business angel" who has taken over leadership aswell but bolsting the club with money, in the millions. Is this the same for Romanian clubs?

Is this the same for Romanian clubs?

From what i know, no.

Only Timisoara has a private owner, but they still receive a large chunk of funds from the local authorities. The 6 other clubs are financed by the local councils or other form of state authority, and some of them have minor sponsors.

One of the issues is that most Romanian companies are owned by Western companies and there isn't a single one who will invest in sport and support a club of whatever (football, volley, handball, rugby). They will only throw some money in big events who can bring them some fast result (football squad before an WC, a successful tennis player like Halep, Oltchim handball team also had some support from Petrom - oil company owned by Austrian OMW). Especially this last one company could have easily support a handball squad considering hundreds of millions profits each year but not a single penny will go into Romanian sport on regular basis other than some opportunities that would arise here and there.

Another example is Allianz Insurance which is established here for more than 20 years and is sending from Romania EURO 50k to sponsor Bayern Munich each year but I haven't heard of 5k going into Romanian sports... I am not expecting a foreign established in Romania or Romanian company owned by foreign company to ever sponsor Romanian sport other than random big events which makes this just cosmetic sponsorship.

Some Romanian companies (especially big/medium size) would have financial means to sponsor sport and some of them are doing it but not on a large scale and usually more companies/businessmen won't associate to support a club....more, local authorities owns the stadiums therefore many companies just avoid to put too much money into it. These budgets are made from a combination of public monies and private sponsorship with a bias towards one or another part , depending on each club.

It's a long tradition in Romania for city halls to support a municipal multi-sports club and rugby takes advantage of this. However, the amount of funds a team gets depends on its results. The mayors love to show their support for a successful club but one with poor results and the ones that play in lower divisions get very low funds or none at all.

The two strongest current Romanian rugby clubs (Timisoara and Baia Mare) have started as private initiatives of local businessmen. Significant funding from the local authorities only came after they already had some good results.

The main reason why private companies rarely invest in Romanian sport is the lack of a working sponsorship law. In other countries, companies that sponsor sports or other activities get tax deductions or other fiscal facilities. In Romania, they get nothing except the related publicity. That's why they will only put some money into the highest-profile sport teams and events, that can generate big visibility.

Friendly match Steaua - Dinamo 12-28
Steaua played without their players at the national team.

The squad of CSM Bucuresti was presented today. Some of the new players:
- US international centre Andrew Suniula
- Samoan international prop Heroshi Tea
- Fiji international fly half Jonetani Ralulu
- Moldovan international lock Andrei Romanov
- young tightead Alex Gordas (return from Worcester)
- prop Kamil Sobota (was supposed to go to Farul)
- Tongan hooker Sakalia Sosefo
- number 8 Daniel Carpo
and others...

Looks like a very strong squad, on paper they should be fighting for the title. Adrian Ion will be the captain of the squad.

Here's a photo of Suniula in CSM's new kit:
