Many of you are asking questions regarding Rugby Training. Numerous questions about how to get more fit, how to increase the size of ones biceps, how to be a better flanker, etc, etc...
It seems there is generally a Medieval-esque veiw towards fitness and weight training. We seem to be stuck in the dark ages where we're told "not to get too bulky, it will only slow you down." Long gone are the days of your dad and grandad, having a pint in the morning and doing laps around the pitch with a cigarette haning off of their bottom lip. We've entered the modern era and rugby is having to play catch up with every other sport of its kind. Growing up in the United States and being a Gridiron (American Football) player from junior high school through university I was constantly exposed to weight training and conditioning practices. As I got older and science and medicine developed newer ideas about training, those would be implemented by our coaches, especially so once I played football for my university.
What we need to do is really grasp the idea that Rugby is no different. In fact, Rugby is, by my personal sworn testament, the most demanding sport on this planet. No other sport contains both brutal contact and gut wrenching endurance.
So, to make a long story short, I, and whoever else, will be posting up training videos for rugby. Any videos I can find relating to rugby fitness will go up here so you can get a better idea of what sort of training makes a better, stronger, faster and yes, harder rugger.
 
The following videos show both exercises that can be performed in the gym and a few that you can work on at your home. The video with the rather attractive female for 7's Rugby is a good video to watch if a home workout is all you can do. I still, however, recomend finding a good gym as you will not reach your peak strength without proper weight training.

I'm a big fan of this video and what he does...it's good to implement multidirectional training and plyometric training in your everyday workouts.

Here are some basic lifts presented by Rugby World Magazine. As a beginner, these excersizes are a good start. Remember always that your form is more important that the weight. People often try to lift as heavy as they think they can without regard to their physical form when lifting. Always opt for lower weights in order to get perfect form, you'll benifit more from that.

Here are some plyometric excersies. These are good to perform along side weight training and should be the sole focus for those under the age of 16.

Good luck. When I find more videos, I'll be posting them up, so stay tuned in, and if you have any training questions post them in the Universitas Rugbeia section here on TRF and you're sure to get some varied replies to help you out.
 
Awesome workout, however when the music starts, you'll want to grab a shotgun and pull a Kirk Cobain. Again, despite the soundtrack it's a great fitness routine.

Great videos, might try out the multidirectional and plyometric trainings next time i hit the gym, but I must say I especially liked that BC Bears one...Yay British Columbia :lol:
