The technology thread

No real geek would have one - only people that think they are! :D
it depends what you're using it for. Take the MacBook Pro - if you're a content creator it is better to use for those who know how to utilise its software and power. If you're just emailing and web browsing then no you're better off just getting a normal windows PC.

There's also a preference of how its hardware and software interact. Android has loads more options and is open source but that in itself creates issues such as most people won't use all the features and options available and also open to more crap apps, which are littered with bugs and adware.

Terrible! Was the captain drunk? How can they miss a fcking bridge?

Those who work in creative arts usually find better SW on Apple products and get tied in.
Unix/Linux devotees are idiots 99% of the time who use it out of belligerence rather than it being the best thing for the job.
Windows works for 99% of people.

Real geeks use the right tool for the job at hand.

Saw reports on twitter that there was some sort of system malfunction on the ship - the extended video show it's lights going off on and before the collision - dunno if that's just speculation or whatever, though

And then there's the conspiracy theorists who are all over the social media outlets. Everything that happens anywhere is a conspiracy with those guys.

Given how slow these ships are, they would have been stuck on a collision course for quite a while before it hit. Can't these things just drop anchors and don't they have some sort of backup?

For the bridge as well, surely the piers are designed to withstand impacts without the whole thing collapsing? There have been reports that US infrastructure is woefully maintained, perhaps that also contributed?

Bold in a nutshell.

Then when they are tied in and try to scale they struggle.

Your indeed correct, Windows works 99% of the time for 99% of people. But if you do need server-like functionality, Windows will play better with nix than Apple ever will.

... and the italic bit also correct - with the addendum that real geeks eyes bleed at the price gouging of apple products so go a long way to find better bang-for-buck.

- They were. Mayday called and the result was the authorities just about had time to get the bridge closed to traffic by time of collision. Only people in the water are from the unfortunate work crew who probably were too far away to be made aware. Seconds counted and the poor bstarts were on the wrong end of the equation.

- Just not possible. Container ship weighing what, ~100,000 tonnes. That weight at just 10 mph is the energy equivalent of you driving a car into the bridge at around Mach 3.3 - and the boat still has around 270 times more momentum. The structure just cannot be feasibly built strong enough in that direction to take that kind of impact and follow on load.

I said the same about Grenfell Tower.....still waiting!
If Hillsborough is any guide and even though the CCTV showed Duckenfield lied and he only admitted it over 20 years later. Then no public official will be held criminally to account in either case.
