Power is the ability to generate as much force as possible in a split second.
Strength is the ability to exert a maximal amount of force regardless of time.

The difference between someone who is powerful and someone who is strong is marked - here is a practical explanation:

Let's say person "A" = powerful, and person "B" = strong.

If you put both guys in a gym and got them to deadlift (http://tinyurl.com/qjfmtxj) as heavy as they possibly could person B would be able to lift more.
It doesn't matter how quickly you lift the weight in a deadlift strength is more important.

Now, if those same guys then go outside and you give them a 10kg shot-put, person A will throw it further than person B.
Even though person B can generate more total force, throwing an object requires him to generate that force in a very short period of time.

So in the context of rugby, power translates to things like ball carrying and tackling, which happen very quickly.
Whereas strength translates to scrummaging and mauling.

rats: cool man, it was clear before the example ! Got it...well then according to those acceptations, yes, absolutely, Pac Islanders are powerful and "caucasians" strong.
Islander props have power, explosiveness, athleticism, speed, that sort of thing. White props have strength...

but it's also because of something else. It's the physiological specimen types. White props seem to have a more robust muscle fiber, or smt along those lines. Their physical type just happens to fit the scrummaging exercise, for some physiological reason.
Like, if you take the Latin-type prop, Nicolas Mas/Roncero, there's this "little rhino" strength about them that fits scrummaging perfectly. Almost no necks but ultra large ones, stocky, low-built. Add technique to that and it's destructive.
Islanders are far from having that kind of physiques.

I think that you have more white props because pacific islanders and black players are more athletic so when younger they are more likely to play 3rd row or backs. So you have a larger player pool of white guys.
 
That "athleticism" you're referring to is power. Power translates to speed and running agility.
Ewis was pointing out that you see big Polynesian forwards who are smashing people about in the park, but that doesn't translate into set-piece dominance.

Ethnic channeling does happen in sport, but genetics are equally attributable to positional suitability in many cases.
 
that's right rats. And Saffycen, yes black and P.Isl. guys are athletic and explosive, therefor are used as backs and third rowers, but think about it. I couldn't think of a single black tighthead some time ago when I tried. You'd imagine out of all those huge black dudes you see, and the sort of athleticism and strength they have, there'd be at least the one. Luc Ducalcon from Racing...and he's average (alright/good for club, mediocre/below level for int'ls) in the scrum. Looking at a guy like Beast at LH and the power he brings to the scrum, you'd imagine there would be way more world wide, I mean some of those black guys I've seen in real life, with super powerful grips, muscles sticking out everywhere, and just an enormous natural strength about them......but black people just don't offer the *strength* (as opposed to power) we were discussing, in a majority of the cases. There are no two ways about it: for the front row, go white.

I think the beast was a converted flanker, I think ? There are some exceptions but on the whole you don't want more running ability and co from your props, though it is weird you don't have more black/ pac islander props.

actually the Pac Islander props are there, in fairly ample numbers. They're just no good come scrum time. It's black guys I'm a little bit surprised to see such a quasi non-existent number of (playing prop). But let's stop here. This isn't the place for this discussion, granted it was spontaneous - and plus, we'll get tagged as ultra-conservative racist far-right fascists soon enough, so, there. Apple pie.

Before you go getting all excited the reason Figallo is leaving Montpellier is his injury (cervical) which has kept him out of the game for well over a season is deemed by the experts as G3, this diagnosis does not give hime the OK to play rugby in France, with this sort of injury he would not get his license signed by a LNR doc. The rules in the uk are not quite as tight, so he would be allowed to play if the injury was diagnosed as G2. There is no other reason for him leaving....... i have the press release in my possession but am not allowed to post it, this is true and honest report.
Great guy and excellent prop forward will be sadly missed at Montypellier but these are the rules in France. Best of liuck to Chippie in the future with his new Club will be joiing Big Jim.........

Brian Mujati.

We're seeing a lot more black kids in English academies over the last five or so years. Kyle Sinckler and Danny Hobbs-Awoymei, to pick two of the better English age grade props over the last little, are both black. One of the younger Armitages is a prop. I'm sure others will emerge.

Cheers for the insight Gaston,I would like to think we wouldn't be stupid enough to sign a player who isn't even fit enough to play, we don't really have the budget to just be carrying a guy all year who will only play 80 minutes all season. I don't know any other tightheads who are available, with Stevens going we must have quite a large chunk of money to spend on a tighthead, maybe even some left afterwards for a back up.

Guy Armitage is a centre in the London Irish academy.

Dudes of West African extraction are just generally liable to be very good all round athletes in my experience.
I haven't seen the same imbalance between strength and power in them that is noticeable in a lot of PI's.

Biyi Alo is another young black prop in the England age groups.
