Tandy is what Tandy does...

Theres no golden fix for this Wales squad, its been decimated of talent by the WRU, it currently stands where Italy were a few years ago, but with less talent coming through the system, and a more broken system.

Tandy will need to be a builder, start at the u20s identify what little there is and plug away fighting (and probably failing) Italy for the spoon for the next 3 - 5 years.

At least Tandy is a long term choice, some of those other names would almost certainly have come in, and either helped a small uptick in performance and left for bigger, or struggled before leaving for bigger...

Look at Jake White, his biggest regret was not taking the job over Gats, but for all the wrong reasons, he's a top coach who would have been a bad decision.

Honestly LRZ must have seen what is happening with Welsh rugby and been so happy with his decision

Imagine being part of this Welsh setup getting nothing but hate
I don’t think he would’ve got hate had he stayed. Most of the ire is directed towards the WRU. People would’ve felt sorry for him if anything. I agree he must’ve been happy with his decision and probably saw it coming.

The players aren't getting hate, that's not fair, its just that a number of them are poor quality, and being hyped unfairly by pundits and media.

There is embarrassment im sure, but even worse some of this squad have played entire careers and int showings without many, or even any wins.

Everyone in Wales knows its a GB issue, and the vitriol has been directed, absolutely fairly so at them.

Clubs, players, and regions arent helping themselves though, its an absolute race to the bottom.

Tandy’s first press conference today. Will post it later when transcript is out but to summarise he said he’s getting Tips out of retirement and we’re winning the GS.

Tbh, while the WRU hasn't done a great job, some of the issues are wider than just in Wales. Rugby in general seems to be losing popularity. Many countries are struggling financially and very few are actually gaining fans. I think there does have to be some tough questions. Yes, it's great when people can support their local club, but in this day and age, that may not be financially viable. Unfortunately, for fans the choice may be two regions or the end of Welsh rugby.

Anyone else filled with abject dread or is it just me

I cant, for someone who was installed because she had a vagina, off the back of a sexism scandal, despite an entire career of abject failure, and no experience of sport, whonin her first interview discussed colleagues and stakeholders but not the fans, spoken in women's sport specifically and didnt mention 1. Welsh women's sport, 2. The men's game, claimed she didnt get the job because she was female, and then rattled off how being a female is a super power the WRU capitalised on, talked about transparency and unity as key issues, before locking the office door to the public, and speaking on killing 50% of thebpro Welsh club game, talked on her business acumen in the context ofnHome office revenue (hahahahahahaha), and even talked about this needing to be a collaboration, and not dictating the way forward, as she'd only get compliance at best, before stating she worked in a top down leadership approach, and even Collier, repeatedly denies she was interviewed due to her vagina, but goes on to say they were looking for gender balance, to get women in decision making positions and minimum fill 5 seats...

So ye, how has she done first year?

Shes farmed out key decision making to outside sources, repeatedly talked about 'reconsidering her position', blamed 200 years of WRU for todays mess, hung Matt Sheratt out to dry, after putting him in the dog **** position in the first place, accepted coaching decisions to quit mid tournament, been indecisive about a replacement, prioritised the women's game installing replacement DOR and coach, and worst of all, totally undermined her words with her actions...

She talked about coaching experience being key, but also wants a young coach to be able to identify with a younger, and culturally diverse player pool hahaha can you imagine young SA players dictating team culture on the national stage? Hahahah

But to be fair she has 2 major positives...

1. She did say from the start, everything will take time, and shes certainly done that, Welsh rugby has been in a rudderless holding pattern for over 12 months, no regional game decision no head coach since mid tournament and summer tour, key issues are talked about endlessly...

2. The passport office has dramatically improved its standards, averaging from 10 weeks per process to 3 weeks in the vast majority of cases. Numbers from Q1 2023 and Q2 2024 are stark, I recently applied for a new born passport, and it was easy peasy, thanks WRU.

But let me leave you with the WRUs words:

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) board has undergone significant changes, including a move towards greater diversity and a reduction in the influence of member clubs. The new board structure features more independent non-executive directors (INEDs) and aims to have at least five women, including one in a top leadership role. The board will also have a specific individual focused on representing women's and girls' rugby.

Thank God for this very important change, we are on the up now, literally bypass South Afric by end 2026!!!

This is pretty funny.

Wales' losing streak hits 18," begins Jane on LinkedIn.

"Breaking records, just not the kind anyone wants. I was going to say, don't worry... I'm sure WRU CEO Abi will find some more flowers to cut from the budget but honestly, it's not a joke. It shouldn't be. But suits at the top are treating it like it is.

"Let's call it what it is: Welsh rugby is in crisis. Not a new one. Not a one off. Years long cycle of failure, masked by PR spins and empty gestures. The WRU gave notice to Ospreys and Scarlets months ago. Yet here we are with no direction. No guts. A CEO who can't seem to make a single executive decision without cutting another cheque to consultants who tells her what she should already know!

Years of decline, in the entire pyramid. Forever missing the actual issues. Beg benefactors to bail them out, instead of building something worth backing in the first place. Rugby itself is losing the global battle. Other niche sports are innovating, growing.

"Rugby clings to the past like a shipwrecked sailor to a piece of floating debris …especially in Wales, where it's not just outdated, it's rotting. We're now 18 losses deep. And counting. But sure, let's keep rearranging the chairs on the Titanic. Accountants in growth roles.

"Because apparently, all the talent you ever need is just down the corridor. That's not leadership or vision. That's survival mode. That's ego driven insulation dressed up as 'strategy'

"The connection between the WRU and the people who made rugby matter? Broken," she added

Now look at the FAW. Night and day. They have purpose. Direction. A brand. A culture. They reignited national pride in the process too. The WRU? Stand for nothing, except protecting their perks and polishing their own legacies.

"As someone with an ego, I don't get it. If you're in power, why wouldn't you want to be the ones who changed the game? Who rebuilt Welsh rugby and put this country on the global map? Because rugby matters to Wales. It was culture. It was identity. It brought communities together. Gave kids something to dream about. We are losing that.

"And when people say, 'Wales is a tiny nation'… I call b******t. It doesn't have to be. Not when we build with ambition. Not when we lead with vision. Rugby can be the vehicle that rewrites that narrative. That's why we built our Sports & Entertainment division. Not just to serve clients. To own. To shape. To disrupt. To take rugby and the culture around it and flip it on its head. Give it bite. Give it story. Give it stage.

I mean is she wrong?

Those are some strong passionate and gutsy words, I agree with a lot, let's see what she does at the Scarlets (if she gets the chance)
