A Political Thread pt. 2

Yeah, can anyone explain how joining the EU helps defence wise?
I was thinking more in terms it would politically be more difficult for EU states to do nothing while 'one of their own' was invaded. For example, politically if Russia had tried to invade Finland rather than Ukraine I think we would have seen a stronger EU response with non-military options. Its about trying to make firm friends while you are being bullied. There is no way the EU will accept these overtures as they are inflexible and obsessed by consistent application of rules (which 99% of the time is the way to go).

The EU had a small Rapid Reaction Force but dissolved it in 2012. Plans to replace it with a larger force of 60,000 have yet to be finalised. Apologies, I thought it was still in place.

Very lucky escape.

But Johnson says we're leading the way...

Surely a question for next Wednesday...

"Does the Prime Minister still insist we are 'leading the way', when we have less than a tenth the number of sanctions as our European partners? Or is this yet another case of the Prime Minister 'inadvertently' misleading parliament?"

This in a nutshell is what I am criticising as the cheerleaders in UK and US. From day one it has struck me as egging on Ukraine to suffer horribly in a futile defence while in a practical sense we offer no contribution that gives Ukraine hope of offensive gains (which, you know, are kind of a requirement of military victory). The cheerleading and massaged media messages ( "they've only captured one 'major' city in a week of conflict") are designed to maintain Ukrainian morale and maximise Ukrainian suffering in the hope that a strong resistance from Ukraine reduces the chance of Russia attacking NATO territory (at which point an American or British life may be in jeopardy). It is completely self serving.

Either back up words with deeds that will give Ukraine a chance of victory or shut the hell up and let the media report the war factually in terms of the steady progress of the Russian army, the inevitable defeat of Ukraine and that Ukrainian minds should be focussed on negotiating terms should the Ukrainian government calculate that extending its resistence will cause more suffering. The world is filled with nations of peoples subjugated by a hostile state with a different ethnic elite and to suggest Ukraine is magically immune to this is disingenuous.

Zelensky doing his head in at the lack of action by NATO on its doorstep (which does beg questions about whether the US and allies will lift a finger against any Chinese action). I don't think a no fly zone is credible but as I've said, we could be giving Ukraine tanks, jets and helicopters if we were truly serious about preventing Russian conquest and enslavement of Europe's second largest nation.

And speaking of China. Worth keeping an eye on given past Chinese-Vietnam war (when both 'Communist'). The suspicion is China is only interested in expanding its sea borders and Vietnam is in no position to contest this, so this may not result in full conflict.

The new British tradition of clapping instead of helping.

Note, we're still not letting in refugees unless they'd have been let in anyway (having family with settled status)
Note, we're still not actually seizing assets of Putin & his oligarchs
Note, we're still giving Russian companies 30 days notice before sanctions are actually imposed

The problem with the no-fly zone is the very real prospect of having to shoot down Russian planes. Putin is just waiting for an excuse and NATO don’t want to give him one. It creates an unfortunate stalemate, but I’d prefer that to the prospect of nuclear weapons.

This is actually not the policy
Feel free to educate me - I can't see anything wrong with my statement.

The closest is that the definition of "family" has been expanded - but that's only for longer stays, not the whether or not. The length of that visa has been increased as well - but that's just the duration, not the whether or not.
Still need to go through the visa application process, still subject to acceptance or rejection.

China realistically are not going to do anything with Taiwan, they will increase their fishing and ocean borders but they have been doing that **** for decades now the chinese fishing fleet get away with so much already.
But Taiwan is a different fish than Ukraine and China is a different beast to Russia. I feel that China will have seen the reaction to Ukraine and prob cooled down on any invasion, they will obviously keep pulling it towards them politically much like Russia was doing before all this. But looking at Chinas reaction to the Ukrainian invasion and how they abstained from voting in the recent UN stuff suggests to me they are not that confident in backing russia all out for a reason.

And let's not forget China still has issues with another big Russian ally in India in terms of Borders.

But if Taiwan gets invaded **** will hit the fan as it's basically the world supplier of superconductors.

also China has set it's lowest growth target for a reason
