USA news & politics

My parents are planning an early September trip to Scotland for 2 weeks in 2026.

They both retired this year and are ready to spend my inheritance at an aggressive pace.

My father is already doing extensive research a year out and bought several books, but are there a few things that a must or something that is regularly overlooked?

So inconsiderate and selfish of them blowing your inheritance. You could always use future access to the grandkids as leverage for them to go easy on the spending. I don't know how active they are or what they like to eat/drink but here a few suggestions which may already be on your Dad's radar if he is doing a lot of research.
  • Castle tour - Eilean Donan / Stirling plus of course Edinburgh
  • If they like golf they could visit the Old course in St Andrews (which is a nice town anyway) or your commander-in-chief's course at Turnberry.
  • The train journey from Edinburgh to Aberdeen is quite pleasant (they sell alcohol on board) and takes in some great scenery along the east coast and across the Forth. There is a really nice place called Ballatar which can be easily reached from Aberdeen. One of the King's residences (Balmoral) is nearby.
  • The west coast has some stunning scenery which I'm sure his research will cover. Skye gets a lot of visitors but also consider Torridon and Assynt (which also has a castle) plus Ullapool as I mentioned before. Glencoe is great for hiking/walking if they are active. I have a soft spot for Inverness - the people there are very warm and friendly in the main plus it's great for salmon.

Is the town itself worth a visit?

Ill be honest, I only visited Dundee twice while up there, and took Uni rugby teams for league games...

I personally thought Dundee was dull, and Aberdeen is the greyest place id ever been in my life, within 20 minutes I was desperate for a grape, or an apple, or anything fruity lol. I'd personally not go again, but further up, I visited Orkney and did a bit of sea kayaking, that was incredible! I nearly took a really low level development job up there just because I loved it so much!

Can't go wrong with anything highlands to be fair, but I also loved the Borders. Even now if I take the camper to see friends in Edinburgh or Stirling we get off the motorway and head through Hawick, Melrose, Peebles and up...

Dundee used to be a proper dump but I would say Aberdeen is worse now. I wouldn't recommend spending time in either apart from transiting through to get to other better places.

If i were dating Tay Tay I'd be doing and taking anything she wanted.

"Oh you want to try that Taylor, sign me up"
The right wing went nuts on her when she decided that because she was publically a-political and essentially from Tennessee (partially Pennsylvania) and was a country musically she was right wing but didn't want to alienate her fanbase. But turns out out she was being advised internally to not make a Dixie Chicks type mistake.

But in 2018 mid-terms she had enough and spoke out against some pretty appalling Republican candidates representing where she's from and wanted to speak out.

Anyway she realease this on her next album
which contain lyrices like "'Cause shade never made anybody less gay"

So she a billionaire who at least tries to play as ethically as billionaires can without stopping being a billionaire. And millions of young women listen to her.

I just take an attitude now the USA doesn't care about gun control and I can't care everytime this happens until they elect people who will do something.
