My parents are planning an early September trip to Scotland for 2 weeks in 2026.
They both retired this year and are ready to spend my inheritance at an aggressive pace.
My father is already doing extensive research a year out and bought several books, but are there a few things that a must or something that is regularly overlooked?
So inconsiderate and selfish of them blowing your inheritance. You could always use future access to the grandkids as leverage for them to go easy on the spending. I don't know how active they are or what they like to eat/drink but here a few suggestions which may already be on your Dad's radar if he is doing a lot of research.
- Castle tour - Eilean Donan / Stirling plus of course Edinburgh
- If they like golf they could visit the Old course in St Andrews (which is a nice town anyway) or your commander-in-chief's course at Turnberry.
- The train journey from Edinburgh to Aberdeen is quite pleasant (they sell alcohol on board) and takes in some great scenery along the east coast and across the Forth. There is a really nice place called Ballatar which can be easily reached from Aberdeen. One of the King's residences (Balmoral) is nearby.
- The west coast has some stunning scenery which I'm sure his research will cover. Skye gets a lot of visitors but also consider Torridon and Assynt (which also has a castle) plus Ullapool as I mentioned before. Glencoe is great for hiking/walking if they are active. I have a soft spot for Inverness - the people there are very warm and friendly in the main plus it's great for salmon.
