A Political Thread pt. 2

The Tories have their 1922 committee where no confidence letters can be submitted by MPs with a leadership contest triggered after the threshold is met. So they have a formal process in place.

Not sure how it would work with Labour. I suspect MPs nervous about losing their seats to Reform banding together could still have a lot of influence especially if it led to cabinet resignations. You'd then have a situation where ministers resign because they fancy a run themselves or have been promised a top job by another contender.

I'd say we're long way from that but don't think it's impossible for Starmer to be brought down tbh. MPs will stab their party leader in the back if it gives them a better chance of keeping their seat.

Which is why I think there is some credibility in the Reeves and Rayner issues

Let them either take the blame or remove the threat. We saw how Starmer isn't afraid of removing the whip to those who rebel and he can't keep being put in difficult positions like with Pip and winter fuel.

He can't remove Rayner...

Been hearing this about Starmer for a while, hos reshuffle doesnt seem too disastrous from a personal POV, he has shown brutal treatment of MPs recently, and well Rayner and Reeves have become liabilities...

Never underestimate the powers you dont hear about in the news though, Blair is akin to New York rats... always closer to the action than anyone thinks!

Like she hasn't had enough unwarranted abuse in the papers already?

Whoever thought publishing that photo of her having a glass of wine would do her harm made a monumental mistake. It made her look human and probably gave her popularity a boost.

Starmer could be done with a bit of that as it seems he doesn't have a connection with the people - bit like Theresa May. Now that Parliament is back I also think he should be doing a live address to the nation in front of No.10 to show that he's taking the migrant hotels issue seriously. Feels like he's hiding away a bit and leaving it to Cooper.

Too female to be a Labour leader.

Not sure if the wine will outweigh the optics on the house issue.

Personally I would quite like her as Labour leader. Despite my issues with her fighting Unite.

Did she have a bunch of smears last year on ownership/taxes? They havent really shifted people's opinion of her.

Depends on what the average is for people's opinion of her is. That's within Labour and outside. I've no idea if she's popular or not.

Is she more popular than Starmer within Labour and with the public. Clearly some in Labour dislike her and as others have said she could be more unpopular than Starmer in general

On the brighter side, we are not the basket case French politics is at the moment. Government predicted to collapse again on the 8th with calls for another GE.

Might explain why the one in one out deals taking it's time. Not sure if the issues might scupper Labours plans.

Irish Presidential election set for the 24th October. Currently not exactly inspired by any candidates. Maybe one can separate in the lead up. We've had a pretty good run on Presidents.

How much power does the Irish President have? I'm guessing it's more than a figure head role as per our head of state

You guess correct, very much a figurehead role as per the UK. Can dissolve governments, and refer bills to the supreme court if they believe it unlawful, but not much more. Our current president has been in the role 14 years and is generally well liked, so it will be a big change.

Pretty uninspiring list of candidates going forward, but at least not full blown psychos either.
