If Tandy starts Mann I might actually be Tandy out. It'll be interesting to see if he does the old Gatland thing after a bad loss and start the same team to give them the chance to rectify the bad performance. Thomas should be out of the 23 on the kick out alone. Tandy has to show some balls here and make some changes though I appreciate wholesale changes is to extreme in the other direction.

I'd probably keep the front row (including the bench options) the same. Assirati actually did alright. I'd put Carre on the bench though and start Smith

Losing Morgan is heartbreaking really. Reffell should get the call up but I'd love to see Deaves called up also (who should be if Mann was sent back to Cardiff)

Edwards should keep his spot but Evans looked ok when he came on so keep him on the bench. Start Hawkins and call up Kieron Williams to replace Ben Thomas' squad place. Max Llewelyn wasn't amazing but he should start. Murray can play but on the wing with LRZ on the other and Rogers at 15.

WOL had Mann down as one of the "winners" of the match alongside Morgan. I'm Honestly at a loss for words. They at least had Thomas as one of the losers so they've/I've not gone completely mad.

Wales by 15 points. The best Wales can hope for from the NZ and SA games is to score some tries and be competitive for decent spells in both games - that would be progress. With where Wales are at the moment, it’s baby steps. If they could win this comfortably, then beat both Italy and Scotland at home in the 6N, then there’s at least signs of life.

Kin hell, I’d bite your arm off for that at the moment. Our only world class player has just dislocated his shoulder, I can’t say I’m optimistic about beating Japan especially if Mann, Thomas, Beard and Co all play.

And if I’m not optimistic about beating Japan there’s a snowball chance in hell we beat Italy and Scotland.

With Thomas and Mann we are now in Adam Beard territory where literally any other player in that position (some players that even play other positions) can do a better job. Moriarty would’ve been way better than Mann FFS. It’s a joke. Davies, Fender, Thomas insert any Welsh lock here, is better than Beard. And literally any other inside center in Wales would be preferable to Thomas. I would even play Tompkins over him. Jesus, I’d even play Owen Watkins over him.

Beard is not injured.

So, i had a little re watch...

I think we were a little harsh on Mann, yes on the whole he was useless, and made errors, but he reminded me of a young Moriarty, he just seems to find himselfnon the wrong side of the law too many times, and doesnt offer enough to counter that, whereas Moriarty absolutely did. Mann was still a 4 for me, but thats up from 2. I actually think id perservere with him for this autumn (now Jacks out).

The big problem with Beard, andnive heard it over and over by those who have worked with him, is that he is the core of the scrum and maul, Asserati will absolutely get mullered without him, and i thiught the scrum was ok against a very good Argy scrum.

The lineout however, Beard and Jenkins can hang their heads in shame, the speed off the floor was Penallta U14s type stuff!!! Lakes throwing is still dodgy, but when your men cant get up then it doesnt matter.

I agree on Ben Thomas, not only is he poor around the park both directions, he rakes the kicking from a developing Edwards, and he is shockingly bad.

Same with Murray, needs dropping, he cant cope in international rugby with high balls, wherever he is he will be targeted, and well absolutely exploited like sunday. In the first half i counted 14 ariels, and Wales lost 12 outright, with 2 going to touch for Wales throw. Not 1 win!!!! Thats a huge problem!

Id keep the front row the same, Carre especially needs long term game time, drop Jenkins, he looks 38 years old ffs. Beard and Fender for me, Jenkins on the bench.

Reffell needs calling up, and starting 7, Wainright and Mann stay in.

Tomos tried way too hard Sunday, but 17 mins in was blowing because he was carrying the load way too much, he has no trust in players or system i think. Edwards forever at this point, no other options, he needs 15 more caps before RWC.

Inside centre is tough, Johnny Williams excels at club level, but he has never had a real run and trust at int, he slips into half teams and untried combos all the time. Id still call him up, at least he has steal. Llewellyn did ok, nothing to play off, no trust in Thomas, however the times Argies attacked his outside shoulder he looked super confident and adapted really well.

Id go Dyer and Rogers wings, LRZ FB.

Japan could easily win this game, dont over play, kick high balls and catch and drive, they wont do that, and we should capitolise from their mistakes, but if they just went tight and low risk id say Japan by 10+.

Ultimately though, players are weak, but the reall issue compounding that is that Tandy has come in, and seemingly just had Sheratt run the team. Wales played exactly how Cardiff did, too wide and exapansive, and left a soft under belly to concede on transition.

Tandy needs to tighten the game up, get tough to beat first, before trying to inclide overly intricate wide plays from 1st and 2nd phase. I counted 5 tries conceded alone from transition, including that massive restart embarrassment. Twice Jac Morgan was caught out on the wing in transition.

Wales will spend the week now working on high balls and lineouts, because that was embarrassing, instead of following the long term build, itll be all reactionary and no progression, which was exactly Pivacs problem. Chasing wins and trying to stay employed.

Thats why when i picked a team before the anouncement last week i went with size, grunt and dynamism off the bench, i would have played super pragmatic, then could talk about the green shoots post loss.

That thumping was the last thing Tandy needed, and well is proving a regular occurance for Sheratt!

No one can convince me Mann, Beard and Thomas should be in the squad let alone starting 15. Sorry.

Look if all 3 are dropped im not going to argue it...

But i personally would persevere with Mann, hes not going to lose the game against NZ or SA lets be honest, id like to see him turn the work rate and dog into performance, who knows, maybe something will click.

Weve seen too much of Thomas in red as it is, he has to go, Hawkins needs to start.

Beard is hard to drop, being so much stronger than any other lock, id rather see Jenkins dropped, he seems to think he is playing for Exeter, and is seemingly going through the motions.

Who do you think comes out on top if you put Rhys Davies and Adam Beard in the octagon?

Id have selected Reffel over Mann, Deaves, or Cracknell personally.
So would I but Deaves would've been my call up when Morgan got injured. As I say, Mann shouldn't be near this squad. His only point of difference is he works hard. I remember the excitement around Shane Lewis Hughes coz he worked hard and had a great mentality. Mann is another one of those.

Similar to Botham, having a great engine doesnt make up for a lack of effectiveness...

Days gone by these types of players would have been shifted to the dragons early doors, but sadly Cardiff dont have the attraction for more talented players these days.

Basham has been more effective in the 3mins of rugby he's played for Wales in his career than Beard and Mann put together. I wouldn't think twice about having Basham over Mann and I recognise Bashams career has taken a nosedive over last year or so.

Basham cant get into the cardiff starting line up...

Harsh on Beard, 4/5 years ago he was a top player, and deserved lions tourist imo. The demands of international rugby moved on a bit and well he hasnt lets be honest.

Well it’s not like anyone listens to me anyway. I’ve already emailed Tandy what he needs to do and I haven’t got a reply.

I’ll just have to accept that Thomas, Mann and Beard will play and we’ll lose to Japan.

Another thing i noticed on replay, and i cant put my finger on whether its a lack of motivation or a lack of knowledge positionally, but when caught in transition players didnt seem to bust a gut to remidy their mistakes....

Morgan, and Tomos aside, who both went through a massive amount of work, most players just seemed to go through the motions, especially in the scramble.

Its almost as if they expected not to win, i would have hoped for players like Wainright and Mann who both have engines to run theor socks off in every direction, going forward Wainright looked effective, but he and Mann moved like tired locks in defence, as did Ben Thomas, Adams etc...

I honestly think the play now is to identify who are the key players, and potential for the RWC, put them in their strongest positions and build a team of potentials around them...

Lake, Jenkins, Morgan, Wainright, Tomos, Edwards, Llewellyn, LRZ...

Head says Wales, heart says Japan. I’m torn with this one. Wales did show glimpses of play against Argentina that makes me think that they can overcome the brave blossoms. However it would be remiss to ignore how competitive Japan were against Ireland for 65 minutes last weekend. If they can keep the tempo high and go for 80 minutes then Wales will struggle (especially in the forwards if it is fast with high ball on play time). Japan do have enough to beat Wales there is no doubt.
Long gone is Warrenball and a team fit and physical enough to strangle the life out of the opposition. But I think some structured set piece play and pragmatism may be Wales best chance. Of course being able to dictate the game enough to achieve that will not be easy either. There is also the Eddie Jones factor, and he will have his charges well up for this test.
This is a test match that could go either way!

Wainwright is OK thankfully. Reading between the lines I think LRZ will start and will probably be the only change in the backline in my opinion.

I honestly think Japan will be favourites

I'd go for the following side against Japan

01 Nicky Smith
02 Dewi Lake
03 Kieron Assiratti
04 Rhys Davies
05 Adam Beard
06 Taine Plumtree
07 Harri Deaves
08 Aaron Wainwright

09 Tomos Williams
10 Dan Edwards
11 Blair Murray
12 Joe Hawkins
13 Max Llewellyn
14 LRZ
15 Jacob Beetham

16 Brodie Coughlan
17 Rhys Carre
18 Archie Griffin
19 James Fender
20 Morgan Morse
21 RMW
22 Jarrod Evans
23 Louie Hennessey

It's one of Beard or Jenkins for me. Neither are physical enough to play at the same time, and I worry Jenkins has really lost his way both for Wales and Exeter. Ideally I'd dump Beard too, but maybe I'd keep him for his experience for this one.

Bring Deaves straight into start, the lads all heart and aggression, with a good dose of skill to boot. I'd also bring Plumtree in at 6 for his extra physicality, but admit he and Deaves could be a penalty conceding issue waiting to happen.

Hawkins in at 12, and mix up the back 3, bringing Beetham's size in at fullback to bolster the aerial game. I considered dropping Murray entirely, but would like to see him on the wing where he can be slightly less exposed.

I'm not 100% myself with the bench, but I've opted to give some opportunities to Coughlan, Fender, Morse, and Hennessey - I also think they can bring genuine impact that alternatives lack. I'd be happy with either Evans or Sheedy at 22.

I'd keep Jenkins. I didn't think he was terrible against Argentina or anything. He put in a shift and he's young, he's certainly worth persisting with unlike Beard. I'd like to see this:

Smith
Lake
Assiratti
Jenkins
Davies
Wainwright
Deaves
Morse

Williams
Edwards
Murray
Hawkins
Llewellyn
LRZ
Rogers

Coughlan, Carre, Griffin, Thomas, Plumtree, Hardy, Evans, Hennessy

If Reffel had been called up (which is criminal that he’s not in the squad and Mann is) then I would have him at 6 and move wainwright back to 8 and have Morse on the bench but alas Tandy seems to think Mann is worthy of a place in the squad over Reffell.
