Welsh scrum in near future

You know, after a weeks worth of Ireland and kiwi whinging, I actually find Wales v England talk refreshing.

:p
You really should stay away from those threads when you see it's coming...It's taken me some years, but I know when to just leave or ignore on forums.

AHEM! If we don't get the Vunnipolas then you most certainly can't have mist Faletaeu, seeing as they're cousins!

Also, I'm with Peat. Hartley isn't one of our best players and it is very offensive to suggest otherwise. I'm seething over here.

Wasn't Hartley man of the match against Australia... for England, and he's a dead set Kiwi?

What this thread has become:

Notice how the Welsh are now poaching good English sunflowers to replace their stringy leeks. Sickening stuff.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. He's still not that good.

Just to clear things up, North is hardly full English. His mother is from Anglesey, and from the age of 14 weeks he lived in Wales and speaks fluent Welsh...

...wait, what was this thread even about in the first place?

Me. ME ME ME ME MEEEE !!!!!!!! and my sweet scrum compilations.
I'd like to call them "Scrumpilations", but that reminds me of something else that I really don't want my YouTube channel to be associated with. Then again, I might get some accident views from lonely 15 year olds.

Oh and the Welsh scrum situation and Adam Jones and his big tummy and stuff.

I'm going to spoil everyone's fun and post a sensible reply. It's an interesting subject.

This is how I see the stock of props post Gethin, James and Jones:

Loosehead

- Rhys Gill: For me Gill is the third best loosehead we've got. He's nothing flashy, and isn't a powerhouse scrummager either, but he does most things well. Pro's: decent scrummager, good work rate, strong ball carrier, solid defensively. Con's: liable to give away a few cheap penalties, although this may be a bit dated now.
- Ryan Bevington: He's always had the potential to be great, but will he every deliver? Pro's: when he plays well, he's like a clone of Gethin Jenkins in the loose, popping up everywhere in attack and putting in some big hits in defence. Pace to burn for a front rower. Con's: hugely inconsistent, and there's big question marks over his scrummaging ability at the top level.
- Rhodri Jones: Personally I'd have Rhodri Jones as a looshead, where he's looked more comfortable at scrum time. He's done well at t/h during the AI's, but I'm still unconvinced that's where his future lies. Pro's: strong ball carrier, solid defensively and good workrate. Con's: still slight question marks about his scrummaging ability. He also needs to be more aware of where his support is when he takes the ball on.
- Rob Evans: Still very inexperienced, even at regional level, but he's got big potential. I haven't seen enough of him outside of age-grade rugby to form a good pro's and con's list, but he looks like a strong enough scrummager, and is a lump of a guy. Has been prone to silly mistakes in the Scarlets games I've seen his play.

Haven't been overly impressed with any of the youngsters at the Dragons or Blues, whilst Duncan Jones and Phil John (who's been superb this season for the Scarlets) will be too old come the end of the RWC.

Tighthead

- Samson Lee: I think this kid is the real deal. I believe he's a stronger scrummaging tighthead than Adam Jones was at the same age, and is continuing to develop quickly. Pro's: scrummaging, defence. Con's: discipline has been questioned this season after being banned for stamping.
- Craig Mitchell: Solid performer who showed signs of big improvements last season with a few impressive cameo's for Wales. His antics over the Summer may prove costly though. Pro's: decent scrummager, work rate. Con's: dicipline will be questioned after this summer.
- Scott Andrews: Signs at international level that he's improving, but oddly still struggling at regional level in the scrum. Pro's: excellent in the loose. Con's: scrummaging.

Dull, how much is Gill being based at Sarries likely to impede his Welsh career?

Also, where would Aaron Jarvis fit in on your depth chart? I am remembering the right guy, right?

Yeah I remembered Jarvis after switching my computer off last night, too late to boot it up again and add him in. Jarvis is a solid scrummager, but little else imo. I only ever saw him as a stop-gap player when we had little other options. Still better to have a dependable scrummager than a liability there, so he could still feature. At 27 he's got a good 5 years ahead of him minimum. I'd put him above or below Andrews, can't decide which.

As for Gill, being based outside of Wales with no release clause is always going to be an issue. Gats likes to have time to prepare his squad, and Gill won't be available as early as his rivals playing in Wales. Unless other options develop quickly between now and 2015, he should still have a good chance to push his case when James and Jenkins possibly/probably retiring.
