Ioseb = Joseph, Besarionis dze = Son of Besarion, Jugashvili= last name
So Its his name
and no he wasn't a jew he was from Gori Georgia the Region Of Mid-Kartli
he was an Infamous criminal in Georgia, later worked as an Agent/insurgent for Bolshevik party, was caught and sentenced to death but before the sentence was carried out he was Freed by request of Comrade Lenin.

Lenin, Trotsky and many other members of Bolshevik party are thought to have been of Jewish origin(That's why they were trying to hide their past by changing names and fixing their documents, fearing Nationalist slavs wouldn't accept them) but not Stalin.

Both Joseph and Besarion were common back then, Slav/Persian/Asian/Biblical Eg. Valery/Murtaz/Guram/Solomon names were predominant up until 85 but since 1990 it has shifted more towards Greek/NativeGeorgian/Latin names eg Niko/Toko/Mate/Luka <names also got shorter and imho way cooler. =))
