Talking points:

Winston Stanley -> Northland
Daniel Halangahu (ex-Waratah), Matt McGahan, Hayden Triggs -> North Harbour
Auckland's backline (Hickey, Anscombe, Saili, Parkes, Moala, Faiane, Lam, Visinia)
Waikato's young but promising team
Marty McKenzie, Charlie Ngatai -> Taranaki
Gareth Evans, Robbie Fruean, Matt Berquist, Jason Shoemark -> Hawke's Bay
Riki Flutey -> Wellington
Jimmy Cowan -> Tasman
Trent Renata -> Otago
Lima Sopoaga -> Southland

Personally I'm quite excited about the Waikato team. It's been a few years since they've had many promising players in the side who you could picture as future superstars, but this year that doesn't seem to be a problem!

I'd like to see a starting lineup of:
1 Hohneck
2 Mitchell
3 Tameifuna
4 Ross
5 Tucker
6 Holah
7 Hohneck
8 Burn
9 Weber
10 McKenzie
11 O'Donnell
12 Lienert-Brown
13 Payne
14 Masirewa
15 Webber

That Wellington team, if it had all its players...

A possible back-line:

9. Tj Peranara
10. Riki Flutey
11. Julian Savea
12. Ma'a Nonu
13. Conrad Smith
14. Cory Jane
15. Jason Woodward

Likely back-line (my guess):

9. Frae Wilson
10. Riki Flutey
11. Matt Proctor
12. Shaun Treeby
13. Jackson Garden-Bachop
14. Ambrose Curtis
15. Jason Woodward

Probably not going to be a world beater...

With Leiua, Batemen and Sopoaga gone, I'm just guessing Flutey will play 10, and Jackson Garden-Bachop will slot into 13 after Boyd seemed to rate him during the U20s.

Wow I just realised how little experience this team has... Only Mitchell, Tameifuna and Holah have had any real game time in Super Rugby!

Not the greatest looking Otago squad to be honest. We are missing some keys players from last season, in particular captain Paul Grant, Shota Horie, Tom Donnelly, Gareth Evans, Fumiaki Tanaka, and Buxton Popoali'i. Our only really note-worthy pick-up is Trent Renata, though he is solid rather than spectacular.

Our props remain our biggest weakness, especially with Craig Miller (who was probably the pick of our props last season) out for the season. Halfback looks to be an issue too, and we certainly don't have the depth in the loose-forwards we once had. The exciting thing though is that we have a very young (and quite promising) squad, stacked with recent NZ U20 players. The likes of Renton, Collins, Walden, Fuatai etc are all very talented backs, but I'm not sure whether they are ready to excel at this level yet....

My pick for the strongest 23:

1. Seiuli
2. Coltman
3. Manson
4. Franklin
5. Latta
6. Ioane
7. Allen
8. O'Connell (c)
9. Renton
10. Parker
11. Fuatai
12. Collins
13. Moffat
14. Suckling
15. Renata

16. Anderson-Heather
17. Brighthouse
18. Sasagi
19. Hemopo
20. Blake
21. Ealey
22. Breen
23. Spence

The top forward pack basically picks itself, though I'm hoping Hugh Blake starts delivering on his potential (then we could go 6. Allen, 7. Blake, with Ioane used as an impact player off the bench). Outside of 9 and 10 the rest of the backline is anyone's guess at this stage. For me there is nothing between Collins, Moffat, Spence and Walden. Collins and Walden are the most talented in my opinion, but both Spence and Moffat have performed well for Otago in the past.

Likewise there isn't much between Fuatai, Suckling, Faddes, Moffat, and Spence in terms of wing options. Spence and Moffat are more makeshift options but has provide to be pretty handy in the past (as they are both fantastic defenders), Suckling brings a phenomenal work-rate (but perhaps not that much talent), while Faddes and Fuatai offer more on attack (with their pace and power respectively), but aren't perhaps as complete as the other options. Renata should start at fullback, but that would mean Ensor - our most potent attack option when on form - would miss out. I suppose Ensor or Renata could be used on the wing, but I don't think either excel in that position.

I actually think renata is better at 10...

Really? He played most of his early career their but for the last couple of years he's been used almost solely as a fullback...

I hope Auckland use Anscombe as a fullback this season, he's been playing his best rugby there. That would mean they'd have to use Piutau as a winger but he's good as a winger anyway

Good to see former counties halfback David Bason back, he's underrated

Seeing as he's off to wales soon i'd have him on the bench covering first-five/fullback

I'd imagine Auckland will be running:

10 Hickey
11 Moala
12 Saili
13 Parkes
14 Visinia
15 Anscombe

Piutau will probably not play any matches due to his inclusion in the All Blacks.

Do any of y'all know what Canadian fans can expect for Hubert Buydens(Manawatu) and Jason Marshall(Hawke's Bay) down there? Both are Canadian national team props and I read Buydens was supposed to start for Manawatu while Marshall just signed a 4 month contract with Hawke's Bay. There's not a lot of teams/leagues willing to give Canadians a shot so I'm pretty excited for both of them.

Buydens got some starts last year with Manawatu especially early on in the season, later he seemed to come off the bench and a handful of games was left off the side completely generallly in the short rest week periods, from what I've heard he held his own but wasn't anything special. If Marshall only gets into a couple of games it will be a boost from last year when he was stuck behind some of the best Props in the D2 and made very few appearances even of the bench.

Buydens and Marshall both started in the weekend. I didn't watch either match so can't comment on their performances though. I suspect both will get plenty of game time this season. Neither Manawatu or Hawke's Bay have that much depth at prop, and given the short turnaround between matches at times both should get plenty of starts/chances from the bench.

Apparently DSD and Mullins are playing club rugby down in kiwiland, not sure where though.
