A Political Thread pt. 2

So once again we are going to renege on the deal and blame the EU after... This is beyond a joke. How are we going to be trusted internationally when we show how willing we are to unilaterally abandon deals within months of signing them and touting them as fantastic?
Like this, you mean?
"The Russian deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, told Sky News: “There is always room for diplomacy, but frankly we don’t trust British diplomacy. I think in recent years British diplomacy has shown that it is absolutely worthless in such issues, I am sorry to say."

It ironically works in the favour of the UK government because they can distance themselves from it blaming it on the DUP

Just saw a quote, "London elites "haven't really understood all of the problems" faced by people in Grimsby and Cleethorpes." says the privately educated guy who represents a wealthy rural community just outside London and is a stones throw away from Sandhurst, Windsor, Ascot and Eton. Yep, he really gets it.
Gove is far from a wealthy London elite tbf.

He's an adopted kid who grew up at state school in Aberdeen, was smart and was td to try for private school. Got in and then had to try for a scholarship when his fam couldn't afford it.

Not exactly Keir Starmeresque

You mean the Keir Starmer who was the son of a nurse and tool maker and 1 of 4 children, who passed his 11 plus to get into a voluntary aided grammar school (so he didn't have to pay) and became the first member of his family to get a degree?

I'll admit he's definitely not at the top, but it's still laughable that he can relate to the people Grimsby or Cleethorpes.

I'm middle class from just outside London. (Although I was the first person on either side of the family to go to Uni) I can't relate really either. I've had a very comfortable life in comparison to many other people in the UK and the world. That's why I wouldn't pretend to know what the north and other deprived areas around the UK need. Instead we need the people living there to lead it and, dare I say it, experts who have studied similar examples from around the world. Apparently one example is in Germany where the western side was far wealthier than the eastern side. They needed to redistribute vast amounts of money in order to level up. I don't see the Conservatives doing anything like that. They won't take from their wealthy constituencies in the south and any money that is redistributed will be targeted on political constituencies they want to win or hold, not on making everywhere better.

Also wasn't the Ukrainian leader asked about how effective the UK was in stopping Russian money and he said "let's start doing something then see how effective it is" aka, the UK is actually doing **** all to stop Russian money.

Believe that may have been the response to whether you could specifically target Putins assets but I would go back and check? It was hard with the translator to get exact responses sometimes

The DUP are ******* idiots. Playing politics on this isn't going to win them over the demographic they need to stay relevant, it'll maintain their support with the largely bigoted base they have and push anyone who wants a progressive North away.

How long will the NI executive been suspended for this time? Honestly the situation in NI needs looking at because it's clearly not working for the people there. Two parties that just oppose each other and if they don't get their way, resign and just create a stalemate and stagnation where nothing gets done.

At least that's the worst they do these days....

Honestly its just inevitable Irish reunification happens, how long it takes is the real question. Every instance of this sort of things just pushes the needle that little bit closer.

Brexit has never been compatible with Northern Ireland to continue being a part of the union and we don't look to be trying resolve it in a sensible manner any time soon.

The last suspension was for a somewhat understandable reason, Foster not stepping down after cash for ash was ridiculous. This is really the DUP digging their heals in mud for no discernible reason other than this being what the DUP do.

Doing this in a time where the North, or at least Belfast, is progressing massively and building in a way that it would, bit for these shenanigans, rival Dublin for the sort of commerce it wants to attract must have more sensible people of unionist backgrounds peering over at the development Cork, Galway and Limerick have seen and thinking that it must be nice

So cap goes up by nearly £700 and the government gives 80% of people £150 one off payment and £200 discount that will be paid £40 per year. Supposedly this is party that understands ordinary people and wants to level up. As Blindside said, it's literally going to be a choice between keeping warm and buying food for many people and many are already there trying to balance it. It's not enough.
