A Political Thread pt. 2

One way to celebrate a trade deal i guess Hopefully all that whiskey calms the nerves.

On a serious note one of my friends is from India, the hate his family have for Pakistan is off the charts.
Aye, some former colleagues of mine had similar views. The hatred between the two is bone deep and not going anywhere soon, if ever

Spent a fair bit of time in Ladakh and Kashmir regions...

Ooooffff, those are some pretty hostile places when in the Pakistan India context lol, not the most welcoming to Brits, especially Kashmir.

Oh ffs India CAN YOU NOT PLEASE

China and USA getting involved diplomatically.
Not sure this US administration has what it takes to get involved here. Trump seemed a little disinterested ("it's a shame"), pointing out that that these two countries have been disputing Kashmir for 1500 years - which is a little longer than I'd thought, what with being aware of 1947 and all that.

Hopefully, this strike by India and retaliation (and fake news - shot down 2 jets? In Indian airspace? Really?) by Pakistan is enough for both to claim they've taken appropriate action, and sit back down again.
The alternative gets very scary, very quickly.

Well... yeah... we oppressed occupied and subjugated the place for about 200 years
I mean, the vast majority of India holds great views and is incredibly welcoming to brits, Kashmir just felt different. But I suppose 70 years of heavy military, insurgency and hatred for anything non Muslim will contribute to that.
Crossing from Kargil to Baramulla was intense to say the least, between towns and villages seem to be these invisible hard line boundaries, especially between Hindu, Sikh and Muslim areas, the air almost turns cold, and things get tense for a few minutes, attitudes are very different within 80 feet of one village to the next.

I havnt returned since 2018, I've heard from friends the region is becoming more unstable, not just Kashmir but the Chinese border also, they told me about being shot at by some Chinese soldiers last year at the Galwan valley, and that Leh is receiving more funding and improving logistical capabilities.

Worrying times, but there have been rays of hope recently, apparently Modi has been praised by China, their trade relationship has strengthened, and India has been going through an economic surge, surpassing the UK and soon Japan and Germany in economy size. Pakistan on the other hand isn't showing anywhere near the same growth, and as disparities grow tensions will also (although these regions are so impoverished they'll be theblast to feel any real benefits outside of new weapon tech).

Fingers crossed they can all come to the table, be reasonable and avoid any external agendas and factors from inserting themselves into their... you say what now, US and Ch...

Ye we are all ******, everyone hit your red button on 3...

How is climbing on it vandalism? I can understand graffiti and what not but standing on it, really?
Deterrent and distraction?

Starmer wants to curtail protests, there's probably some heinous stuff in the crime and policing Bill they want to slip by us, if the news is reporting on statue climbers, there's probably something to uncover?

What's the motivation behind this, though? I know you'll say it's in every politicians interest to curtail protests but I don't buy that.

If I had to guess, and I genuinely have no idea, but I'd say it's a bit of sophistry to play well to the type of voter that cares about this kind of pointless ****.

You know I don't trust politicians, I think you give them too much credit. After BLM destroyed some statues, and defaced others, such as the Chirchil statue the movement lost momentum, and when sanity prevailed pretty much everyone agreed that the actions of the few who looked to use BLM to advance their cause were destructive to society.

Churchill was barricaded off during the Tommy Robinson protests a few years ago, oops sorry, forget to mention he was formerly know as Stephen Yaxley Lennon, and other statues have been protected since.

Let's be honest, it's only a matter of time before there's a new George Floyd, or another BNP type ******** gets locked up and thousands are out on the streets again chanting against white people, or imigrants...

I'd have to look into the crime and policing Bill to see what's actually written, but as of right now we are all just speculating.
