A Political Thread pt. 2

Labour sees it as a issue because voters love to blame the most vulnerable and people below them as the reason for their own misery.

The people who actually pass the threshold for mobility claims would prob rather not have a disability. Remember these are not people who suffer from anxiety and adhd.

Labour are appealing to people who have no intention of ever voting for them sadly
Your not wrong, but 2 of the leading issues used for PIP is Anxiety and back pain, which have been the reasons used by those who would abuse the system.

Fibro has also had a massive uptake recently, amazingly all issues that are pretty much undiagnosable.

There is an issue in the 3rd sector regarding inexperienced staff applying for PIP on behalf of homeless people, regardless of disability. Its literally written in to job descriptions (optimising benefits), and missed construed as 'get as much as you can for your clients' instead of what is deserved.

Ultimately though, it isn't a major issue financially unless it keeps increasing the way it is, then there will need a review.
Well well well, I might have been momentarily incorrect, but directionally right.

Some excerpts:

A surge in the number of people claiming disability benefits has seen the number of Motability customers rise by about 200,000 over the past two years to 815,000. People exchange some of their disability benefits for access to a car, helping them get around and giving them independence.

Such is its scale, nearly one in five new cars sold in Britain today now comes from Motability.

Clearly a bunch of people are part of some organized disability crime ring exploiting this.

Expansion has not been fuelled by any boardroom wizardry so much as a surge in the number of people claiming benefits. The number of people entitled to Personal Independence Payments (Pip), Britain's main disability benefit, has jumped from 2.6m in 2020 to 3.6m last year. It is forecast to rise to 4.2m claimants by 2030, according to estimates published by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

The bill for sickness and disability benefits is on course to hit £100bn before the end of the decade, rising from £65bn last year. The rapid rise is placing intense pressure on public finances and causing growing alarm in Westminster.

Well I am glad all these recently disabled people have luxury cars to ride around in. Meanwhile, @Welsh Exile is stuck riding his 15 year old bike around town. Good news is he has great quads.
BTW there are already more than 4m people who receive benefits, the 3.6m figure is only England and Wales. It's predicted to be much higher than 4.6m by 2030

But we are talking about the mobility part of PIP

But we are talking about the mobility part of PIP
20% of all new cars sold are via the mobility program. That's an insane stat.

No PIP in general. About 40% or so of claims are for psych issues, anxiety being a leading contender, about 50% of these claims are used for enhanced mobility.

I know, sounds like a lot, but when you complete the forms you realise how flawed they are, planning a journey, being social or feeling anxious are all commonly used to determine inability to go anywhere, at an enhanced rate ffs.

I know a girl in a wheelchair who doesn't receive the enhanced rate, and another who feels anxious and doesn't like to meet new people (unless clubbing, or being involved in numerous clubs) and does get the enhanced rate.

Decision makers arent medically trained, they're box tickers

Well, im not sure if anyone has done any refugee work, or training, but this scheme and others like it are pushed as selling points to sell trafficking services to the UK.

There are websites and posters, even local adverts in newspapers promoting how everyone in the UK gets rent, PIP, NHS, free cars, and UC
They total the maximum payments up to about £2400 plus a brand new car, but dont mention illegal immigrants being ineligible for any of thos, ineligible to work, be a student or even travel freely, not to mention the cost of living.

People handing over their life savings for this promise is an escalating problem, I work with a group of lads who were all given away at 12 to 14 years old by their parents to traffickers (they're all Kurdish) and their stories of crossing Europe are horrendous, only to find out when they get to the UK it was all around lie. Its incredibly sad.

Show me the stats on anxiety being the leading reason for mobility claiming

Y'all have no excuse not to have a secure border. You are damn island for God's sake.

Yes, anxiety is a leading cause of enhanced rate PIP. My stats were PIP in general, but Firbro, back issues and psych issues are still high up the chain for the motability scheme.

Like I said, I dont think fraud is a huge problem, but it is escalating, and needs addressing before it gets out of control.

Fraud is taken seriously, ive seen demands of 100% repayments for fraudulent PIP claims, however when the perpetrator is on UC of 269 per month, with a limit of what can be garnered, its pretty fruitless.

if I remember correctly, the fraud rate of UC is about 10%, the overpayment rate for PIP (accidental mistake by the government) is about 0.5% and the fraud rate for PIP is 0.01%

Partially because fraud is rare, partially because there is no appetite to penalise perpetrators, but ultimately and insignificant number.

It's an interesting point many seen to not understand, there comes a point where the cost to prosecute fraud is higher than the cost of the fraud itself.

Not sure what the game is here.

I reckon with all the backbench in-fighting going on at the moment in the Labour party, and with Starmer being forced to make concession after concession over the past few months, he's trying to take a hardline approach now to force things through.

February 2022 - Info about Afghans wanting to move to Britain to escape the Taliban leaked
August 2023 - Government learns about the breach and sets up a secret scheme to relocate them.

February 2022 - Liz Truss is Foreign Secretary
August 2023 - Liz Truss is Prime Minister

And she wants to claim she is shocked at the secrecy and cover up of something that was first leaked likely by someone in her department and the scheme then agreed during her premiership... **** me the woman is shameless.
