The ABSA Currie Cup format for 2007 has been announced- the format will remain the same, i.e. a n 8-team top section and a 6- team 2nd division. The top 7 from this year`s CC competition will again be there in 2007, with the bottom-placed side, the @lantic Pumas, playing off on a home and away basis against the 2nd division champions, the Boland Cavaliers.
This promotion/relegation match will take place after the Super 14, thus giving an oppurtunity for some of the S14 stars, notably Boland`s Rayno Benjamin, Jongi Nokwe and new recruit Hanyani Shimange to play in the playoff series. Boland will have to win both matches though, in order to be promoted to the top section.
From 2008 onwards, the bottom 2 teams in the top flight will face off in promotion/relegation matches vs. the top 2 teams in the 2nd division.
A good call IMO- we retain the basis of strength vs. strength, and in the process also give the smaller unions something to play for.
