Champions Cup 24/25 - Saturday, 24 May

UBB are a great story in that they're a fairly low budget French side, had 9 academy grads playing yesterday and attracted other top French guys through success and good vision. I thought yesterday was innocent enough.

This screams another French team who'll have 12 - 24 months in the sun and fade away. Like ROG and Aldritt losing the head after the 2023 final for perceived slights that had nothing to do with Leinster.

I don't think they will fade away, unlike La Rochsmell they have an identity and actually built on it. ROG always seemed to me like he was trying to speed run to any T1 international gig and made the team more about him than the players. But I don't see Bru looking to leave anytime soon (and only to Toulouse and France).

The French supporters, clubs and players have generally always been shithousers always will be especially in Europe. I've always loved the French supporters the Clermont fans especially have been my favourite supporters to have hanged out with. But my god do they go on with the talking ****.

Had a great weekend out in Cardiff and enjoyed both games. A few random thoughts:

Both games went as expected; Bath far too good for Lyon and Bordeaux just getting the better of Northampton. Based on Saints having a transitional season and Bath being excellent this year with a strong squad, Bath-BB and Saints-Lyon might have been more competitive.

Saints had no luck with injuries, either before the game or during.

Furbank stopping a knee to the head like that really is foul play and deserved a card. Losing 2 of your back 3 in the first 5 minutes is always going to make life difficult, especially against such a talented back line.

Losing Mayanavanua to a cheap shot and having him replaced by Prowse after half an hour is a significant downgrade. I know it's been suggested on here before, but if a player is injured and out of the match due to foul play, the player who caused the injury should be required to be replaced, rather than returning from his yellow card. Sort of a 10 minute red, if you like.

Northampton should have taken the points from that penalty immediately.

Bordeaux missed a trick for their mascot, it really should have been a beagle.

The mascot race was fixed, the Saints mascot (apparently a Saint Bernard, despite looking like a beagle) had costume overshoes on, whereas the Bordeaux lion ran in trainers. Poor refereeing.

Speaking of poor refereeing, Amashukeli did not have his greatest game, which was a shame. Constant TMOage made it very stop-start... and what was Brace doing, allowing players to constantly be 2-3m offside?

Overall, we had a great time laughing with BB fans.

I hope we're not going to hear any more 'English clubs aren't competitive in Europe' nonsense when the competitions restart next season, but I won't hold my breath ;)

Journalist Charlie Morgan, Telegraph on X

" My view of the scuffle at the end FWIW: Jalibert tackles Dingwall as Dingwall cross-kicks. Tangle afterwards as final whistle goes. Langdon confrontation with Jalibert. Pollock tries to break that up. Some of Bordeaux bench, including Poirot, rush Pollock.
" And I can't be completely certain, but I 99 per cent sure that the push Pollock gets from Tatafu isn't what upsets him. What upsets him has already happened, potentially from Poirot"
" I don't think what he's gesturing about is the push that was caught by TV cameras"

I mean Langon kicking off would be a 100% expected, he's a fiery player who loves to kick off.

Personally I believe Pollock deserved a smack for his after whistle actions.
His after whistle reactions were the result of being hit in the throat though - journo on the scene said that the cameras didn't catch the initial flash point just what happened after

Then why did he only claim the throat action after going for poirot and then being pushed in the face?

Pollock didn't say anything as far as anyone knows (reports), that was Dowson
No he indicated on camera after the spat that he had been grabbed by his throat, hence the french taking the **** out of him.

You mean the pulse check thing? That was a celebration he did from the game the week before. UBB were aping that in the photos I saw
