What are your thoughts on rugby players on juice? Surely most are
 
There was a thread about that recently, general consensus was that: no, they aren't.
Far too many random drug tests throughout the year (on and off season) for it to be going on.

There was one player who tested positive at the World Cup, I think that just about shows the extent of drug use in rugby.

That's 1 player out of 600 who were at the World Cup.
 
And also the simple fact that its unneccesary, which is a commonly looked over point. In the NFL steroids are everywhere because the goal is largely to get as big/fast as possible. In Rugby muscle mass has to be tempered with speed and aerobic fitness, which keeps raw size down.

The optimal size to be a rugby player is pretty easy to reach without needing extra substances

Even that was 'only' for banned painkillers though, not 'roids.
 
Yeah, I am pretty content that if any banned substances are used it would rather be at schoolboy level where size matters more than in pro rugby and someone who is a bit smaller/slower to develop cracks under pressure and makes an error in judgement.

At the highest level skill and work rate are MUCH bigger concerns than muscle mass. I'd say that Richie McCaw is probably the showcase of what a brilliant rugby player has been over the last decade and, in relative terms of course, he really isn't 'big' at all.

Also, A LOT of cases have pretty much been purely accidental and substances that hardly can be considered 'performance-enhancing' but hardly has any effect in small amounts for the treatment of colds etc.
