England 2025/26

Oasis 90,000 tickets minimum price £150 over 7 dates. Fans drinking 250,000 pints a night according to some reports. About £8 a pint at Wembley now. Coldplay just did a longer Wembley run.

The main issues is Twickenham has very vocal Nimbys. The SRFU seem to be doing well getting gigs though.
Having only one train line doesn’t help either. If that goes down after a match or event it’s chaos. Wembely has both the Met/Jubilee lines, Lioness/Bakerloo lines and National Rail all completely separate. And the walk between Twickenham and its station is through directly residential areas unlike Wembley.

I like the question content but the question itself is incorrect as Twickers can’t hold more concerts. The question should be, how much more would a stadium earn with gigs in a different part of the uk (still probably London) even if you paid to build it and sold twickers.

That would really let you know of moving was the correct option in 5-10-20 years etc.

I’m hoping that the RFU have done their due diligence before investing in fixing up twickers.

I imagine probably less than what Twickenham could get even being in area with no other stadiums suitable for large concerts,

So using the Tottenham stadium as an example, initial estimates were £400m, then estimates rose to £750m with delays and other issues and the final cost being around £1b.

So if the rfu wanted to move they’d need around £750m as a top end estimate. I’ve no idea what twickenham land is worth to sell but some googling would place the twickenham land as bigger than 10 acres which would make it worth around £100m-£900m.

But then there would be the cost of playing in the time to build the stadium.

So from my initial albeit very quick and dirty valuations and googling I’d say build a new stadium. That’s probably good enough maths for old Bill anyhow.

They would probably need to spend a fair bit of money on improving transport to a new stadium as well - refurbishing a station or even building one on an existing line if there is not one nearby. As well as possibly road improvements. Spurs didn’t have to do quite as much of that as it was just expanding capacity on an existing site with existing links

I think it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Moving anywhere else would probably involve moving to a location away from populated areas. It then means that people come and go just for the event and you're unlikely to get extra people, unlike say Wembley where there are lots of places nearby for extras and so more people are likely to come. Also on developing transportation links, again that sounds incredibly hard. Look at HS2. Yes there are other issues, but one of the biggest has been buying people out of their land and too many people are fine with the idea as long as it doesn't impact them.

I don’t expect them to build a new line or motorway but if it’s too far from an existing station a new one might be desirable for several reasons and a stadium build could contribute towards it.

Any major project and you're looking at years and years of nimbyism and politician positioning getting in the way. You could start the process now and probably not see any progress until 2035, with little hope of getting a finished project until into the 2040s if you're lucky.

As a country, we've made it incredibly difficult and expensive to build anything.

But if the RFU wanted it I’d expect it to be done sooner because they are all corrupt in the RFU and I’m sure they will have the right people on their payroll (free tickets, corporate gigs etc).

A new station smallish one would cost around £50m (from past experience and I have done a few stations in my time). But a new line to connect to it would be massively expensive.

Depends where you were building it though and if it’s in an area the government/ council want to regenerate you could get funding for the other stuff.

We don’t need a rugby only stadium at all.

Wembley has a 90,000 capacity and can hold 54 events of over 60,000 attendees p.a plus more under 51,000. Play home 6N there and take the AIs and others around the country.

RFU can rent Regus offices in Croydon.

Sorted.

I was in Croydon the other day…all I can say is I can’t imagine any RFU big wigs would survive not being mugged for more than 2 minutes in that hell hole.
