I just thought I would write a short post to mark his passing

"So who was Eric Tindill?" I hear you ask.

Tindill was one of New Zealand's most illustrious sportsmen. He died on Sunday at the age of 99.

Incredible as it may seem, this man was an All Black, a New Zealand Test Cricketer, an International Rugby Referee, and an International Cricket Umpire. I wonder if there is any other person in the world who has represented their country in two sports, and then gone on to officiate at International level in the same two sports. Very few I would imagine.

He toured the British Isles with the 1935-36 All Blacks, then went back just over a year later with the New Zealand Cricket Tour of 1937.

Here is a piece I scanned from my old rugby scrapbook (back in the days when a scrapbook really was a scrapbook)
