Fictional World League

For whatever reason playing the World League mode just speaks to me (Probably because it's almost like a movie with the way you have to work your way up from the bottom to the top)

So my question is has anyone ever attempted or succeeded in creating a fully fictional World League and what tools and editors would I need to have a decent shot at succeeding?

I don't know if I want to do a mostly Euro/SANZ league, North American "Franchises" or a mix of the two, But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

What kind of knowledge of the files am I going to need?

Also, Would it be wise to start with the editing of the team names (Can I do that in the editor you suggested?)
