Greatest World XV Ever 'Past and Present'

1) Os Du Randt
2) Sean Fitzpatrick
3) Jason Leonard
4) Martin Johnson
5) Brad Thorn
6) Francois Pienaar
7) Richie McCaw
8) Zinzan Brooke
9) George Gregan
10) Dan Carter
11) Jonah Lomu
12) Tana Umaga
13) Brian O'Driscoll
14) Jason Robinson
15) Serge Blanco

9. Gareth Edwards(Cannot leave the Welsh legend out. Still regarded as the best player ever long after he retired from the game.)

How anyone can put Gregan above him is flabbergasting (I just wanted to use that word).
Personally I'd have Barry John at 10 as well. He retired due to the almost deity-like worship, and couldn't handle it. On the Lions tour of NZ, a NZ flanker (I forget who) made the comment 'Barry John rolled his eyes and I fell over'.

Mate if you've ever had a coffee from George Bar and Bistro (GG Espresso) you'd understand why Gregan is the man.

I fail to see why his ability to make a mean mocochocolatte has anything to do with this! :p

Because quality off the field means quality on the field ;)
Maybe if I sampled one of Gareth Edwards' babymochachinolattte's I'd change my mind.

Gareth does beer or tea! He hasn't been influenced by Starbucks!

I think Gregan just cut everyone down. Fearless tackler.
Yes, I remember little George cutting down Os Du Randt. Pretoria must have thought there was a earthquake when Os hit the deck. However, I also remember that the Wallabies got roasted well and proper in the game!

Here is my addition. To be honest, it is a mixture between an objective take on the proper Wolrd XV and my subjective favourites. In retrospect I see that I lean a bit towards modern players...

1 andrew sheridan / os du randt
2 sean fitzpatrick / raphael ibanez
3 carl hayman / jason leonard
4 martin johnson / paul o'connel
5 victor matfield / fabien pelous
6 george smith / serge betsen (openside flanker)
7 juan smith / jerry collins (blindside flanker)
8 kieran reid / zinzan brooke
9 joost vd westhuizen / fourie du preez
10 andrew mehrtens / dan carter
11 shane williams / jonah lomu
12 tim horan / ma'a nonu
13 brian o'driscoll / conrad smith
14 bryan habana / doug howlett
15 christian cullen / andre joubert

And just for fun, a Barbarian wildcard team to challenge them in a pre-season game:

1 tendai mtawarire
2 andrew hore
3 pieter de villiers
4 eben etsebeth
5 ali williams
6 neil back
7 sam warburton
8 thierry dusautoir
9 mike phillips
10 stephen larkham
11 mark cueto
12 fillipe contepomi
13 yannick jauzion
14 jp pietersen
15 jason robinson

Greatest XV & 2nd Greatest XV & More

For me this is the greatest XV. Not necessarily the best, as we all know that modern players are generally of a higher standard than those of yester year, and thus naturally are by in large better players. However, I believe that greatness does not directly coincide to how good a player was/is and it is unfair to hold players from different generations to the same standard in terms of Rugby playing ability. Comparisons of the greatness of players between generations can, however, be fairly be determined based on the impact that said players had in their given time period, as this puts all on a level playing field.
Again, this selection is not based purely on performance, or stats, or any one thing for that matter, but rather a combination of numerous factors, such as performance, longevity, achievements, impact on the game, importance to their team, statistics, their legacy etc., which all contribute to the overall impact that a player had and their greatness. Clearly, this a very subjective selection and I have tried to be as objective as possible.
That being said, here is, in my opinion, the greatest Rugby XV of all time, as well as an 'Unlucky XV' and some honorable mentions

I've only selected players I've seen in the flesh or live on television (1973-present day). Whilst acknowledging that you can't accurately compare eras, I've tried to assess a player's quality compared to the average player in their era; and assumed that if they'd been playing today; with access to today's dietary knowledge, training methods, medical care etc etc, a superstar in the 70's would be a superstar today.

1) Os Du Randt
2) Sean Fitzpatrick
3) Fran Cotton
4) Martin Johnson
5) John Eales
6) Michael Jones
7) Richie McCaw
8) Zinzan Brooke
9) Gareth Edwards
10) Dan Carter
11) Jonah Lomu
12) Tim Horan
13) Phillippe Sella
14) David Campese
15) JPR Williams

15. Christian Cullen - No player could do what he could do. 46 tries in 58 tests. Highest Tri Nations try scorer. He was brilliant, and he finished at only 26 years old, imagine if he played a few more years injury free.

Give this man a bells, infect make that 2

Good selection, but can tell you're South African lol.

Can't help but notice everybody puts Fitz at 2

One SA hooker I'd suggest is Uli Schmidt. If you ever saw him play - hard as nails and could read a field 3 moves ahead - always popped up and made good yards over the advantage line. Probably best loose play tight forward ever.

I think it's not just what Fitzy was as a player, but the impact he had as a leader and captain... and his longevity. He was a great in every sense.
No doubt Shmidt was awesome though... Dane Coles' predecessor.
