Australia have to be favourites.

England have the worlds premier player in Andrew Flintoff at this moment in time, averaging 85 with the bat and 21 with the ball over the last 12 monthis in ODIs which is quite some feat.

India, Pakistan and New Zealand also have strong one day outfits and are worth considering.

Does New Zealand have to win both matches to go through to the next round or do you only have to finish 2nd of the 3 teams?

Black Caps rewrite record books in Champions Trophy win

New Zealand achieved a satisfying and record-breaking opening round win in the ICC Champions Trophy when beating the United States by 210 runs at the Oval today.

Spearheaded by Nathan Astle, who scored his 14th ODI century to bat through the innings and finish on 145, New Zealand reached their second-highest total in ODIs when scoring 347 for four wickets. It was an outstanding effort by the Black Caps, even against the limited opposition.

The list of records included:

347 is a record score in Champions Trophy history.

145 to Nathan Astle is his highest score in ODIs and the second highest by a New Zealander.

210 is the highest winning margin by a New Zealand team. It beat the margins of:
206 v Australia, Adelaide 1985-86
181 v East Africa, Birmingham 1975
167 v Bangladesh, Colombo 2002-03
161 v Bangladesh, Sharjah 1989-90

21 balls for Craig McMillan's 50 equalled Lance Cairns v Australia at Melbourne in 1982-83.

Coming out of the New Zealand winter, and without most of the top-order having had lengthy stays at the crease during warm-up games, it was an effort that was sensibly compiled after the USA opening attack confined New Zealand to 58 for two wickets in the first 15 overs.

New Zealand were asked to bat first after a delayed start and the strictly medium-pace USA bowlers were able to gain disconcerting swing that demanded attention before a scoring assault could be launched. Stephen Fleming (15) and Hamish Marshall (11) were early victims when attempting to put the pressure back on the bowlers.

But Astle, in his most complete innings since returning from knee surgery last summer, was joined by Scott Styris in a 163-run third-wicket stand that put New Zealand solidly on track to dominate. Styris scored 75 off 78 balls and when he was out, Chris Cairns added three. But then Craig McMillan joined Astle for 46 balls of absolute mayhem.

In that time they scored 136 runs! McMillan raced to 50 off 21 balls, equalling Lance Cairns' New Zealand record in ODIs. By the 50-over mark, McMillan had scored 64 off 27 balls with seven sixes and two fours. Astle's 145 was scored off 151 balls and included 13 fours and six sixes.

The USA batsmen started quickly, reaching 52 in only nine overs. But then they ran into Jacob Oram who took three wickets in five balls, and when Chris Cairns took a wicket in the next over, the USA had lost four wickets in eight balls. That was effectively the end of the match as the USA limped through to 137 in 42.4 overs.

Oram ended with five wickets for 39 from 9.4 overs while Daniel Vettori took three for 14 from his 10 overs.

Haha no.

New Zealand opened the bowling very poorly. Do we face you next week?
Yep Thursday it will be interesting either we will win just or get thrashed despite this thrashing we gave USA i still think Aussie will beat us

England to shock the Aussies in the final. It's at Lords, so anything could happen.

I don't think India will make the final. They are out of form at the moment, and I don't know whether Tendulkar is back from injury yet.

Aussie Choke when it comes to this competition.
i know im abit biast but im gonna go with the NZ.
i just think the way weve been on ODI's lately is quite impresive.
but in all honesty i have no idea whos going to win.

i dont think england will be anywhere.
we spanked them in the Natwest series.
we won it without losing a match.

Well England have just beaten Zimbabwae by 152 runs, England scored 299/7 and Zimbabwae were all out for 147

yeah, but that was Zimbabwe Z!!
they got beaten by the USA a couple of days ago in a warm up match.
that shows you how good they are.
we will wait for england to play a more credible opponent.
