That Japanese try is definitely rugby porn, great line out ball and a backline move that would open up a lot of backlines, but as Nick pointed out Kriels defense and it is a set move.

The Savea try just comes from brilliant open play rugby and show cases the greatest skills in rugby, taking the high ball, good forwards work getting to the break down, quick ball from Aaron Smith out wide and the power of a great winger smashing over... it's the complete try in terms of skill set and rugby in general.

But according to some it was a joke and ez stuff... bloody hell, logging out before I get banned for abuse.

Where as Vainikolo's try was against an impenetrable USA defense.

That's bs if I'm honest. Jonah Lomu's try in 1995 goes down as one of the best of all time - not because Mike Catt was a defensive juggernaut - but because beating 3 players down the sideline and running over 1 - is impressive.

If we want to talk sense of occasion - doing it against France in a QF in Cardiff is about as big as they come. I feel there is an effort here not to give credit where it is due. If it was a Japan winger scoring Savea's try it would get the popular vote hands down.

Agree, I don't get this at all. Jesse Kriel's defensive work in that Japanese try is as bad as anything the French did. It's Savea's hands down, the japan try is a carbon copy of a Leinster try a few years ago and no one remembers that in comparison to Isa's wonder try against awful Leicester defence a year earlier! Had SA won that game the try wouldn't be on the list.

Why shouldn't a set play be try of the year if it's executed as well as Japan did it? How often do plays like that actually work?

I'm just wondering what virtues of an open-play try over set-play are? Both require individual brilliance and talent, both require a bit of heads up rugby and actually playing what's in front of you defensively(both required a bit of poor defensive work.

Not saying ones better the the other.

Isn't it international try of the year? Otherwise I'd be banging on about another bit of Joseph Magic although I wish he was greedy and finished this one.

Because one is rehearsed over and over until perfection and then you go out and just have to handle the pressure to pull it off, it's pretty awesome stuff and great execution no doubt, but it is learned and with good enough coaching and good enough players you can pull it off as cmac pointed out it was a carbon copy of a previous set piece.

That open play try is from complete improvisation and the perfection of skill and brilliance, all aspects of that try are awesome, yes the French tackled with the wrong technique, but Savea still had the raw strength to knock them off with ease, which is still impressive in itself, also it was a big knock out game. Skill and raw athletic ability should always be the most celebrated thing in sports.

It is yeah, I'm just using this example as I really don't think Goromaru's try is incredible other than the fact it was in a game where Japan beat SA. It's a simple move that my team run and that teams run against us, it works when the defence makes a big mistake but other than that it's used to get a hard running winger to get over the gain line.

I remember that Leinster try and loved it. Your points aren't wrong necessarily, and perhaps all real highlight reel tries require an element of defensive weakness being exposed, but I just like tries like that Leinster one and that Japan one where a team can slice through an opponent without even being touched by the defence. It's that kind of play with skilful players like BOD that sides who do things like put Banahan at 13 could never achieve.

Don't get me wrong, they're very good tries but for me the try of the year needs some genius or something out of the ordinary, therefore I don't think Eddie Jones taking a page out of Joe Schmidt's (Or someone else more likely, it's not a complicated move) playbook and executing it is deserving of the try of the year in my opinion. It is a completely subjective award though as there is no conceivable way to judge the aesthetics of a try though, I just like stuff that I've never seen before which is what Savea's try is.

Well you seem to be rather out numbered sir and that says it all really..

All it says is people don't really care about All Black quality (because they're favourites) and prefer the romance of Japan getting the award. Human nature.

Yes. Absolutely. It must be other people getting it wrong. All them.

I personally voted for the Savea try. Really enjoy seeing a player back themselves like that and really go for the line. I wouldn't question for a second the result if Goromaru won the award. Beautiful try and well worked under intense pressure.

The real issue I had were idiots calling it an average try or "nothing special". If they think the Goromaru try is better, good for them, at least don't go branding an obvious brilliant try average. Hence my response and statement.

Call me unreasonable or whatever, I just think they look like bigger dicks.

Pretty much this, I am still undecided on which try it was, but a lot of wingers in the world wouldn't have scored that, and we know it because there hasn't been a lot of these tries scored this year.

Okay Goromaru (Japan v SA), Savea II (ABs v France) & Tipuric (Wales v Ireland) aside. I'm not convinced any of the others are better than this one 20+ phases (I think this started from about the half-way line if memory serves me correctly) plus individual brilliance at the end.

This better be a joke.

No, England really has scored a try this year :D

Savea 2 and Debatty are both brilliant. But I think context has to come into it so for me it's the Jap. Such great execution of basic skills at pace and to score from a set piece totally avoiding contact is quite special. Definitely one for the purists.

Not that it is an international try - but I thought I'd share a bit of magic from the Hartland Championship Final. Wanganui won it yet again...but can't argue with this try.

Now that's a try!!!

Goodness, some of these so called unofficial contenders that have been posted by other posters were pretty darn lame to be honest, but this try is one of the best I have seen of all time!!

Why send me private messages about how I am clearly displaying bias and so on. You clearly have an issue with anyone else having an opinion, I have no bias in a thread about the best try that was scored, I just said my reasons for the one I liked and why I didn't think the other one was as good. Its a New Zealand try and that is the only relevance I can understand in you having an issue with me.

I didn't send you a PM, I added negative rep to you because you sound like a huge dick saying an obvious brilliant try was average and nothing great, run along now.

How long are you going to carry on insulting people and generally filling this forum with negativity. It was my opinion that I did not think the try was worthy of the top 5 in the year, doesn't matter how much you disagree just control yourself and act your age.
