Kurtley Beale in Trouble

Not sure it was your computer as there seemed to be difficulties last night as I could not get into any threads or my PM!

Yeah, same here. But my computer does act up because I really need more memory. Really. Like, I have half of what's needed these days to keep up with page loading and such. All the bells and whistles on websites these days really slows me down. So that page that I posted the article from froze me up because the audio came on automatically and my computer couldn't handle both the audio and the pictures at the same time.

I call my computer T Rex. :P

I feel bad about his problem with Alcohol . For one saying your going to look elsewhere because your not in the starting team shows that you have a massive attitude problem. Secondly after all of the chances the ARU has given him to repay them he just acts like a ********, most people don't get drunk at work and its not like he has not being offered help to get past that his issue with alcohol. also he is so inconsistent seems fitting that his last game was the awful performance last weekend. He will fit in well in the NRL I think the Australian Rugby fans want more players that look like playing for the country means something less like KB. On a side not if it is true and walks because of this I think it is a shame that few Indigenous australians play rugby.

The trouble with the flights can't have helped the situation. I would be equally annoyed and frustrated. Would be interesting to see what the deal was with the t shirt

I find it amusing that many people say he'll move over to League...which does seem more tolerant of bad behaviour, at least that which takes place on the pitch...

(I just had to find a reason to post that...again...)

Well thankfully he seems to be making it easy for them.

Twitter is saying there is some trouble conning for Link over this as well.... And that it will all come out in the wash.

I have to admit, I honestly don't get how this has become such a big story... I mean what happened? Beale wore a T-Shirt on a 4am flight from South Africa to Brazil and was needlessly asked to change it. In exasperation he made a smart arse comment and it escalated. Seriously, has no one ever had an argument with an over zealous colleague?

I mean, it's not like he bashed his girlfriend or was photographed pi-s-s-ing in his own mouth FFS.

There's a bit of a back story from what i've heard. apparently KB had a photo of a naked female archer draped in a flag and it was sent around with the insinuation that it was Di Patston or something to that effect.
Beale apologised at the time, and it sounds like after the plane incident, it has dredged up the past and has effected Patston to the point she has gone on sick leave. This may not be true, it's only what i've heard.

These situations happen in businesses all the time, you just don't hear about it because they aren't of the same profile as the Wallabies. The problem is, if Beale walks the plank, so should Patston. My understanding is that a lot of the players have sided with Beale and if Beale goes and Patston stays, then it will become an even bigger issue.

I have read all that, but I think that shows that if anything the problem is more McKenzie and Pulver for putting an under-qualified micro-manager to treat the players like children in charge of them...

Anyone missing Robbie?

Actually no. Because whilst I was a big fan of him and thought he was made a massive scapegoat, if he was still in charge we'd still be hearing all that BS about needing an Aussie coach.

Having McKenzie at the helm with all this **** going down shows the blame needs to be shared at the top.

All sorts of rumours out.
People claiming McKenzie is involved with the individual at the centre in not-so-flattering ways; the McKenzie knew about the pictures/texts in June (Pulver said they were just uncovered, so either he or McKenzie is telling porkies). Lost the dressing room; players about to leave.

Geez, Roger Lewies an ARU board member? Bloody soap opera going on!

Well that's what i'd like to know. It's interesting that her LinkedIn and facebook profiles were pulled when all this came out.

Now that I'm hearing more stuff, I'm wondering if Beale could actually be a scapegoat in all of this? Do you think he may have acted as a sort of whistleblower, perhaps addressing (albeit innappropriately) in public major issues that have been stewing behind the scenes, and now it's finally all boiled over?

I really don't know (or really care) about the politics of Australian rugby, but I can't help but feel there's maybe more to this than Beale's rant and that, perhaps, this is just the tip of a very big iceberg. My only real concern is what it'll spell for rugby union in Australia, especially with league having what seems to be a good foothold in the country. Fans, sponsors, and money may all start shifting league's way if people get fed up union's off-pitch antics.

The drama continues to unfold:

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie denies speculation of improper relationship with team official

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie has quashed rumours he is in a relationship with ARU business manager Di Patston. Speaking at a media conference to announce the squad for the Wallabies Test against the All Blacks next week, McKenzie said his relationship with Patston was nothing more than professional.

McKenzie also denied reports that he first became aware in June of the offensive message that Wallabies utility Kurtley Beale allegedly sent to Patston via a social media app. "I became aware of them (Beale's text messages) in Buenos Aires (last week), said McKenzie. "When I know about these things I deal with them."

He said that the issue was difficult to deal with and had been a "massive distraction" to the team. He also defended his decision to drive Patston to the airport in Buenos Aires in the fallout of the mid-air argument between Beale and the ARU business manager.

"I take welfare issues seriously."

Meanwhile, Queensland Reds playmaker Quade Cooper has been selected in the Wallabies squad for next Saturday's Test against New Zealand.

As Waratah's five-eighth Bernard Foley is the only other No. 10 in the 32-man squad selected on Friday, Cooper will likely make the final 23-man squad when it is finalised next Tuesday.

ACT Brumbies winger Henry Speight has also been included in the squad, although at this stage will not be considered for selection as he enters the final stages of his rehabilitation from an injured hamstring.

Speight will be available during Australia's five-game Spring Tour, which includes matches against the Barbarians, Wales, France, Ireland and England.

Speight is one of four uncapped members in the squad, alongside Western Force tighthead prop Tetera Faulkner and centre Kyle Godwin, and Melbourne Rebels winger Tom English.

Melbourne Rebels backrower Luke Jones has also received a call-up, after previously earning his international ebut for Australia in the second Test against France.

ACT Brumbies centre Matt Toomua is out of the squad through injury after receiving a head knock in Australia's loss to Argentina in Mendoza, while Kurtley Beale will not been considered until a Code of Conduct Hearing is finalised.

"You're always searching for the right balance of experience and youth in a squad, so it's pleasing to see Quade Cooper available once again and also a number of potential debutants putting their hand up for selection," McKenzie said.

"All four of the debutants have had some exposure to the Wallabies program this year, which is invaluable as they continue their transition into the group.

"While Henry has made great progress, we've already had once false-start with his injury this year, so we'll continue to take a conservative approach until he is 100 per cent ready to go.

"Quade too has been progressing nicely and will come into the squad having played three matches in the National Rugby Championship. This will be his first involvement in the squad environment this year, so we'll look forward to assessing where he is up to when we assemble in Brisbane on Sunday."

Players who have not been considered for selection due to injury include hookers Stephen Moore (knee), Tatafu Polota-Nau (ankle), Nathan Charles (pectoral), Tolu Latu (arm) and Heath Tessman (ankle); prop Scott Sio (ankle); backrowers Wycliff Palu (head), David Pocock (knee); Ben McCalman (shoulder) and Dave Dennis (knee); centre Matt Toomua (head) and outside backs Peter Betham (ankle); and Chris Feauai-Sautia (shoulder).

Squad: Ben Alexander, Tetera Faulkner, Sekope Kepu, Benn Robinson, James Slipper, Saia Fainga'a, James Hanson, Josh Mann-Rea, Sam Carter, James Horwill, Rob Simmons, Will Skelton, Scott Fardy, Scott Higginbotham, Matt Hodgson, Michael Hooper (c), Luke Jones, Jake Schatz, Will Genia, Nick Phipps, Nic White, Quade Cooper, Bernard Foley, Kyle Godwin, Tevita Kuridrani, Christian Leali'ifano, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Tom English, Israel Folau, Rob Horne, Henry Speight, Joe Tomane.

A bit of a beat up headline mind you - most of the article was about team selections.

Kurtley Beale has been stood down and is almost certain to leave Aussie rugby union at the end of the year. Congratulations to the ARU for another blunder. We simply cannot afford to be losing the talent we have and more importantly, the players who attract crowds and put bums on seats.

There is a key point that the media seems to be missing from all of this. It doesn't really matter if Beale is at fault or a scapegoat, it doesn't matter if Patterson is a victim or an incompetent meddler who interfered one time too many. The story here is this is another example of very poor player management and leadership on behalf of the ARU and Ewan McKenzie. How is it that Kurtley Beale had perhaps his best season in years and is performing as a model teammate at the Waratahs but completely falls apart when in the Wallabies environment? This is not an isolated incident either and is very reminiscent of the JOC and QC meltdowns of the past. You can hardly blame Ewan for those incidents but one must ask questions of the ARU.

People or very quick to point fingers at players for bad behavior but when bad behavior is a common theme it becomes pretty evident that the problem isn't the players, it is the system!

Guess what? Rugby Union players are not all intelligent or mature people. Some of them are prone to making bad choices. This is where player management, team culture and leadership come in and in these areas Australian rugby is failing.

The whole Beale / Patterson scenario is a lot of things but it could have been easily avoided if these players were operating in the right environment with the correct support structure and under the right system. The All Blacks and Springboks understand this. Why don't the Wallabies?

If a team performs poorly for a game, you ask questions of the players. If a team plays poorly over a season, you ask questions of the coaching staff. What happens when a team plays poorly over a decade and multiple coaches? Isn't it then time you ask questions of the governing administration? I for one, have some questions for the ARU.
