Okay so im going to Christchurch for 7 - 9 months to play the rugby season. Anyone know of any good websites or mediums in which I can arrange accomodation or find flats in want of flatmates or anything like that? I loved the look of trademe.co.nz and thought i was sorted until I went to register and seems theyve blocked all non-kiwis from signing up.

Need to be around the New Brighton area. Thanks!

Trademe would definitely be your first port of call. It's weird that you can't access it, I'd recommend emailing the administrators to see what they have to say/

Otherwise, https://www.airbnb.com/ is worth a shot.

Its definatley only for kiwis, apparently to stop chinese hacking agencies and other evil sounding corporations. Many other people have had this problem, you even have to give a landline phone number and topping up your account on there from a non-nz based banking system (eg, uk visa) results in suspension of your membership.

Yeah, I can see whats up there and read the info without signing in, but theres no contact information displayed at all.

Chuck us some links on here and we might be able to get the details.

That airbnb site has some on there too, I had a quick squizz.

The last one looks ideal for me, as my girlfriend will be coming with me for the first 3-4 weeks. I may post more as I go through more and any valiant NZers can come to my aid and give me the details. Thanks for helping me out on this by the way, I hope all Kiwis are as kind as you :)

Hmmm unfortunately there aren't any contact details provided, except for a mobile phone number for the third one. You can email them via the site, but it doesn't actually give out their email address.

Might be worth creating an account using a proxy?

Some people have tried, they're quite good at detecting that sort of thing i've heard. Even come across stories of kiwis who tried to buy things whilst abroad, only to be told they cannot until they return to NZ. If I could create an account I'd ask for their email through the site and sort it out off-site anyway but therein lies the original problem. Shame because that last one is the best for me that I've seen so far.

If you are looking at the last one on that list (Burwood) I will PM you the mobile phone number.

That sounds really interesting. What level of rugby will you be playing?

I'm very envious J-dawg, I expect you'll have the time of your life! I spent two months down there during the last world cup and I'm now a total Kiwiphile. Enjoy yourself you lucky So & So. :D

I work in chch, i'll ask our young graduates where they found their flats.

First one said he logged on to trade me from France only a few months ago....

When I went first to NZ to study ( 1year) I stayed the first 4 weeks in a youth hostel which wasn't too expensive and later I met some people with whom we rented a house. Kiwis are really easygoing so you will sort out things quiet easily.

I would be very grateful for that, how much would a text cost from the UK?

Not really sure what the going rates are in the UK, maybe half a pound? What you should do is text them, asking for an email address, that way you won't be racking up a huge bill.

THIS

that's exactly what i did when i first moved to Auckland after graduating, then you can give their land line and address to sign up, still friends with some of the people i met back them...good times

Thank you for all the kind words fellas, only a couple more weeks until my visa clears so need to get my finger out here!

I'm still a baby really so I'll be playing for an 'academy' colts team, i'm not sure what that equates to in UK terms. At the very least I hope to have learned a few things and had a great experience. I deferred my uni course at Loughborough for 12 months to pursue this.

I don't doubt it for a second! It's a rugby lovers paradise I've heard.

That's very reassuring. If sorting something out from over here is too difficult then that doesn't sound too bad at all. Of course if England do the impossible and get New Zealand again next week nobody will want to share with me anyway!
