Reds Head Coach Ewen McKenzie has pumped up the experience level by a few hundred caps for the Reds' second trial match of the season, a Ballymore hitout against New Zealand's Crusaders this Friday night.

After successfully mixing and matching an expanded squad of Reds, QAS Reds Academy and Wider Training Squad players against the Waratahs in Lismore last weekend, McKenzie has rolled out some more big guns against the Crusaders, including Queensland's most capped player, Sean Hardman (137 caps) as starting hooker.

Wallaby wing Peter Hynes (73 Reds caps) will start at fullback in his first run of 2010 and will be vice captain to interim skipper Ben Daley, who is one from one as captain after leading the Reds to their 26-24 win over the Waratahs in last week's first trial match, in the absence of regular captain James Horwill.

Former All Black flanker Daniel Braid (68 Super Rugby caps) will also have his first outing of 2010 after taking time out last weekend to return home to New Zealand for his wedding.

Former Melbourne Storm centre Will Chambers is on course to make his professional rugby union debut after being rested from last week's trial as a precaution, due to a lower back strain. Chambers will go straight in at the deep end, being named at outside centre in the starting lineup.

Wallaby scrumhalf Will Genia has been named on the bench, while fellow Wallabies James Horwill and Digby Ioane will sit this one out.

"As we did last week against NSW we want to give guys a chance to perform, so we'll still have an extended squad of 28 for this week's trial to try a few things and look at individual and combination performances," McKenzie said.

"If players want to be in the mix when the time comes for us to select that team for Round one against the Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium, now's the time for them to put their hand up with a good performance."

The trial match against the Crusaders kicks off at 7.30pm on Friday night at Ballymore. Tickets are available through Ticketek.

Gates open at 5.30pm and the curtain raiser match will be Gold Coast South African expats v Gold Coast NZ expats, kicking off at 6pm.

Parking restrictions will be in force around Ballymore on Friday night and limited on site parking will be available for patrons, who are encouraged to arrive early.

The Reds will travel to Perth for their final trial match on Friday, February 5, before kicking off the 2010 Bank Super 14 tournament against the NSW Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, February 13.

Should be a good game this, Reds might just edge it I feel

Big guns? Where is Horwill, Cooper and Iaone? I'm afraid the Reds are likely to challenge the Lions for the wooden spoon this year.

Reds destroyed them, Man of the match for me was Anthony Faingaa, he played exceptionally, Will Chambers was a waste of money imo, Rodney Davies had a blinder as did Higginbotham and Andrew Shaw, Aidan Toua got nerves and stuffed up alot, Hynes ended someones game early after he knocked him out for 25 seconds, before hammering Waldrum 1 minute later.

Match details:

A try by captain Ben Daley (pictured) helped the Reds beat the Crusaders 20-12 in their pre-season trial match held at Brisbane on Friday.

The Crusaders lost Ryan Crotty to concussion after he collided with an opponent when chasing a kick early in the match.

Both teams scored two tries each, the Crusaders through Thomas Waldrom and Jonathan Poff, and the Reds through Will Chambers and Ben Daley.

The difference proved to be the kicking of Ben Lucas, who was successful with a penalty and two conversions.

Tim Walsh also kicked a penalty for the Reds. For the Crusaders, Slade kicked a conversion and missed his other conversion attempt.

The Crusaders were a little unlucky not to score at least one other try. Ash Parker was over by the posts for the Crusaders at the end of the first half, but the referee disallowed the try due to an apparent knock-on when a Slade high, wide kick appeared to be parried back by Joe Wheeler to Parker.

And at the end of the match, centre Robbie Fruean dived over in the corner but the touch judge ruled that he put a foot in touch.

The match was played in still, humid conditions, but the ball proved very slippery due to a thunderstorm earlier in the day. The scoreboard was not working due to a lightning strike in the afternoon.

The Crusaders began the match well, with Waldrom capitalising on some good forward drives to dive over after six minutes.

Lucas kicked a penalty and Chambers scored a converted try soon after following a good run by fullback Peter Hynes.

A converted try by Reds prop Ben Daley pushed the score out to 17-5.

After the break Walsh kicked a penalty to extend the Reds lead to 20-5 before the Crusaders finally put some phases together and flanker Poff dived over by the posts for a converted try.

It was a classic Crusaders score, with the Reds stretched on both sides of the park and Poff running on to a will-timed Jared Payne pass.

Prop Peter Borlase was yellow carded for a professional foul but the Crusaders hung on and did well not to concede any further points while he was off, with Waldrom joining him on the sideline as Ben Franks went to prop.

With the Crusaders restored to 15 players, they went back on to attack and Fruean streaked up the left sideline and dived for the corner only for the touch line to rule him out.

The Reds, who beat the Waratahs in Sydney in their first pre-season match last weekend, adapted to the slippery conditions much better than the Crusaders tonight.

The Crusaders, who were without All Blacks Richie McCaw, Brad Thorn, Dan Carter, Andy Ellis, Kieran Read and Corey Flynn, play the Blues in Motueka in their other pre-season match on Thursday.

Head coach Todd Blackadder said: "There's no substitute for a hard match like that one. It should do our guys a lot of good to get that under their belts."

For the Crusaders, Waldrom played well, as did lock Isaac Ross and hooker Ti'i Paulo. First-five Slade, who also played fullback, showed some good touches, as did fullback Payne.

Final Score Reds 20 (17) Crusaders 12 (5)

The Reds need Cooper at 10, Ben Lucas strugled as did Chambers. Can't see him getting much game time in the centres on that performance. How good was Ben Daley-had a blinder, Higginbotham looks like he will have a big year and Hynes looked good at fulback too

went and watched this game. most boring game i have ever seen! reds were crap! crusaders even worse. waste of money. blues will smoke them next week

Higginbotham is one the players I feel will be in the Wallabies squad pretty soon. Very very tough, uncompromising player who is very good in defence.

Look out for him to have a smashing season.

Don't think the torrential down pour leading up to the game had anything to do with it?

oh yeah! the rain magically turned the players ****! although the reds are like that 99% of the time.
