Romanian Rugby

Good for CSM, I think they have a talented squad and thay could do very well next season with good coaching.

In other news, Romania U17 has won the Cross-Border Tournament in Baia Mare, defeating Poland 35-3 in the final.

The Superliga semifinals will be played tomorrow, both will be live on TVR2 and www.rugbytv.ro:
Baia Mare vs Dinamo (10.00 local time)
RCM Timisoara vs Farul Constanta (20.00 local time)

Yes,he's a very good coach,he won national cup in Italy and helped Tunisia to improve and won the championship with Timisoara

Semifinal results:
Baia Mare - Dinamo 40-9
RCM Timisoara - Farul Constanta 0-9 (!)

Huge surprise in the second match, it has just ended. The match officials found something wrong in the papers of 6 Timisoara starters (most of them key players: Fercu, Capatana, Calafeteanu, Kinikinilau, Umaga, Fonovai) and they were not allowed to play. The start of the match was postponed by 30 min to allow Timisoara to replace them in the squad. No doubt this has something to do with the ongoing dispute between the champion club and the Federation. The match itself was a dire affair but Farul took their chance and won. Timisoara is out of the title race without scoring a single point at home. I'm afraid this dispute will have some very nasty consequences on the future of the Superliga and the Bucharest Wolves squad this season...

Baia Mare and Farul Constanta will meet in the grand final of the Superliga in Bucharest next week. Congratulations to Farul, the lucky winners afer a dispute they were not involved in.

This also means that Timisoara will not play in the Challenge Cup next season, after years of waiting. It seems that select sides like Bucharest Wolves will not be allowed to take part after this season, so the Romanian representative will be Baia Mare or Farul Constanta.

Political tricks are ruining rugby, and some unions' administrators wonder why people are losing interest in rugby, well that's the reason, political rubbish

Some romanian fans said that police was called to investigate about what happened in Timisoara game

I wouldn't be so quick to blame the union for this. According to some rumours I've heard, some paperwork was destroyed on purpose before the match and the author of this sabotage is suspected to be a Timisoara staff member. Apparently the police has started an official investigation.

I don't want to blame anyone without proof but many things have gone wrong since Dusan Filipas has been appointed as Timisoara vice-president. He started by sacking team manager Dan Borzas, followed by head coach Danie de Villiers. Then there was the ridiculous incident with the "leaked" letter to the FRR (also blamed on internal sabotage). Last week he starts an open war with the union, refusing to release players for the Wolves. And now this... No doubt his actions have made him a lot of enemies (it seems that inside the club as well) and RCM's season has been ruined as a result. Filipas should resign in my opinion.

In any case, this was a shameful incident.

Edit: Indeed, RCM Timisoara has announced that the police has started an investigation. They are asking FRR for the match to be replayed.

This is an ugly story, will only feed the conflict already started between Timisoara and Federation.

Timisoara's attitude is disturbing, they are blaming everyone else (Farul, Baia Mare, Federation) but not a single word about their lack of professionalism in last months. One of the club's patrons (West University from Timisoara) issued an angry public letter which is shocking if you think is written by a university professor.

Anyway, Timisoara lost this season against Farul and also against Baia Mare so I don't know from where their attitude to take for granted the result with those 6 players in the field.

As the investigation on the semifinal continues, RCM Timisoara has announced again that none of its players will play for the Bucharest Wolves. FRR will have to replace the 9 players with options from the other clubs.

This will severely weaken the Wolves and it makes Italian club Calvisano the big favourite for Challenge Cup qualification.

This stupid dispute between the champion club and the union will probably destroy the season for the Wolves and will have a negative impact on the national team before the November tests.

Good scouting from Worcester. Gordas was very impressive for CSM Bucuresti this season and has a lot of potential.

One of Timisoara officials announced that Fercu signed a contract for 1 year with Saracens and will move there.

Baia Mare is the new champion of Romania, after defeating Farul Constanta 25-19. I think Baia Mare were the best team this season and they would have probably won vs Timisoara as well. As for Farul, they did better than expected in the final and fought for it until the last minute.

Final Superliga 2014 standings:
1. Baia Mare
2. Farul Constanta
3. RCM Timisoara
4. Dinamo
5. U Cluj
6. Steaua
7. CSM Bucuresti

Top scorers:
1. Florin Vlaicu (Farul Constanta) - 189p
2. Luke Samoa (Baia Mare) - 152p
3. Ionut Dimofte (U Cluj) - 115p

Top try scorers: Madalin Lemnaru (RCM Timisoara), Stephen Shennan (RCM Timisoara), Eseria Vueti (Farul Constanta) - all with 7 tries scored

Worst discipline - Vasile Rus (RCM Timisoara) - 6 yellow cards and one red card

A total of 73 foreigners have played in the league this season, by far the most numerous were the Tongans (22).

Other news:
- Catalin Fercu was officially announced by the Saracens. I think many will be surprised by his skill.
- Tongan international flanker Sione Vaiomounga (Baia Mare) is in a very serious situation. One week ago he was taken to the hospital with severe bleeding symptoms and the doctors found a severe kidney failure that could have killed him. The player tried to hide his condition because he wanted to play in the Superliga final. The club has called for all the fans of the team to donate blood for him. He will never be able to play rugby again and will have to receive dialysis his entire life unless and kidney donor can be found.
- The final round of the European 7s Championship will be played this weekend in Bucharest. Saturday will be a day full of rugby on the Arcul de Triumf Stadium because the 7s action will be followed by the Bucharest Wolves vs Calvisano match. Honestly, the pitch was in an awful state last week, I'm afraid it could become unplayable.

Due to Timisoara refusing to release its players for the Wolves and more players being injured, the Wolves will have a weakened lineup. Calvisano are now the favorites for Challenge Cup qualification.

The Saracens will come to Timisoara on October 18 to play a friendly match against the local club, which is part of their global network. Next year they will also send some of their academy prospects to play for RCM Timisoara in the Romanian league.

The owner of the club also said he is preparing important transfers for the next season, they are in talks with three Romanians, five South Africans and two Serbian players (I assume the Serbs are part of the club's project to make rugby more popular in the neigbouring country). With the support of Saracens, Timisoara hopes to get a wild card to play in the Challenge Cup next year.

In other news, RC Barlad has won the second division, earning promotion to the Superliga. They have a young squad and their head coach said they are not afraid of being trashed in the top league and they hope to get support from the local authorities and sponsors to be able to compete.

I'm really excited about the Saracens visit, might even drive all the way from Bucharest to watch that game live.

Great news for Timisoara!
I assume Saracens will send his second side (Saracens Storm) because the first side will play against Clermont in European Champions Cup, but still a good team.
I'm looking forward about this game, and about names of Timisoara's new players!

It's ok if it's the second side, hopefully there will be at least a few names from the first team who don't make the squad for the Clermont match.

Timisoara has annouced more details about the transfers for next season: six New Zealand players (described as starters for ITM Cup teams but no names have been revealed) will join the club. The five South Africans mentioned will be young players recruited by the Saracens who will be sent to Timisoara to get some first team experience. Grainger Heikell has been confirmed as head coach for the next season while former All Black Sosene Anesi will retire as a player but stay at the club as assistant coach.

Heroic result for the Bucharest Wolves, who qualify for the Challenge Cup after a close 13-10 defeat away at Italian champions Calvisano!

Not only the Wolves played without the players from the best domestic club (RCM Timisoara) but they had to play without one man for almost the entire match (Florin Vlaicu was red carded after just 14 minutes for a high tackle). The Wolves were leading 7-6 but in the last 10 minutes another Romanian player got a yellow card so they were down to 13, the Italians scored a try and were leading by a single point on aggregate. Everyting seemed to be over but even with two men in the bin the Wolves scored a crucial penalty in the final minute and qualified for the Challenge Cup.

I've heard an interesting rumour today: after he did great in the Superliga and for the Bucharest Wolves, Sean Morrell wants to also become eligible to play for the Romanian national team by using the 7s loophole. Morrell was capped by Fiji in both XVs and 7s. Apparently Lynn Howells thinks he would be a great adition to the Oaks and I agree with him.

It's strange that Fiji has been ignoring this excellent player while for example Farul Constanta's Ravulo Malakai is a starter for the national team (in my opinion, Morrell is clearly better).

In other news, the decisive last minute penalty kick that secured the qualification of the Bucharest Wolves hit the post before going in. What a dramatic match end.

Romanian Cup results today:
RCM Timisoara - Stiinta Petrosani 110-0
RCM Galati - CSM Bucuresti 8-124
CS Navodari - Farul Constanta 7-75
RC Barlad - Steaua 16-62

Once again the huge gap between the Superliga pro teams and the amateurs from the second division is obvious.

Other news:
- Sean Morrell has fractured a finger in the Calvisano match and will not play again this season
- according to a rumour I've heard, Timisoara's centre Paula Kinikinilau will leave the club. He is said to be upset because he wasn't allowed to play for the Bucharest Wolves, which also ruined his chance to play for the Romanian national team and potentially make it to the RWC.
- here's the Romanian U19 squad that is preparing for the European Championships: Cosmin Manole (CS Dinamo), Alexandru Savin (LPS Focsani), George Han (CSS 2 Baia Mare), Bogdan Enache (CSA CSS Steaua), Ciprian Lucaci (CSS Gura Humorului), Tudor Butnariu (CSS Unirea Iasi), Norbert Balin (CSS 2 Baia Mare), Andrei Iurea (CS Cleopatra Constanta), Adrian Motoc (CSA CSS Steaua), Marian Soana (CSA CSS Steaua), Bogdan Doroftei (CSS Barlad), Jean Don (CSM Bucuresti), Marian Nita (RCJ Farul Constanta), Cristi Boboc (CT TV Dunarea Galati), Alin Grigore (CN Dinicu Golescu/CSM Bucuresti), Alin Ghiarasim (CSA CSS Steaua), Alexandru Palii (CSM Baia Mare), Leonard Iancu (CN Dinicu Golescu), Stelian Ureche (CSA CSS Steaua), Ovidiu Butoeru (CSU Cluj), Andrei Neacsu (CSA CSS Steaua), George Iacob (CS Dinamo), Dumitru Papaiane (RCJ Farul Constanta), Mihai Melnicov (CSA CSS Steaua), Daniel Zaharia (CSS Barlad), Adrian Bors (CSS Unirea Iasi), Eduard Bencea (CSA CSS Steaua), Sabin Stratila (RCJ Farul Constanta) and Remus Zaharescu (CS Stiinta Petrosani).
