I have a question. In the former Eastern bloc, there were many general sport clubs including football and other sports. In Romania, there were Steaua, Rapid and Dinamo. Do these clubs have Rugby teams?

this is great there was a russian rugby one and now romanian i like it thank you it would be great to have a georgian rugby thread

As you can see in this topic, Steaua and Dinamo still have rugby teams and both are pro today. Rapid used to have a rugby team but it was never as good as the other two and doesn't exist any more.

Thank you. Could you tell me any club selling their Rugby jersey?
And Romanians have a bad tradition--they do not write "Bucureşti" correctly. Romanians wirte "Bucuresti". (see the logos of Steaua and Dinamo)
I want a jersey with correct spelling of Bucureşti, or other city.

You can buy the jerseys of champion club RCM Timisoara here:
http://www.oneills.com/shop-by-team/rugby/rugby-union/timisoara-rugby-club.html

Romanians don't usually use the special characters on websites because it can lead to errors (btw, the name of the country also includes a special character: România).

Thank you for the URL.
I understand "special characters on websites can lead to errors", but that is irrelevant to club logos, because there is no possibility of errors.

Agreed. Really enjoying this thread, and a Georgian one would be great.

Could you tell me what "Rapid" means? Is this word from German (because there is a football club "Rapid Wien")?

It means "fast" or "quick". I'm pretty sure it's a word with Latin origins because it exists in Romanian, French, Spanish and Italian.

Rapid Bucharest was the club of the railway workers, later it became supported by the Ministry of Transport. But their rugby team was never very important because the railway workers had a much older and prestigious rugby club: Grivita Rosie. Grivita Rosie was founded in 1932 and has won the Romanian championship 11 times. In 1964 they have also won the European Champions Cup (an ancestor of the Heineken Cup), defeating French champs Mont de Marsan 10-0 in the final.

I remember when I played rugby, no romanian tried to join us. Argentines, irish, italians, english...we even had a northamerican combo with an ontarian canadian and a guy from Colorado. However, when I trained judo or wrestling, there were always romanians (big, bad and means) around.

I say this because romanians are the biggest foreigner community in Spain..we're talking about almost a million.

P.D: it's funny for me reading romanian...I get 25-40% of what it's said.

I think there are a number of Romanians who play rugby in Spain. I noticed that Spain's U19 national team last year had 2-3 players of Romanian origin. But football will always be the king sport in both our countries.

I can also get the general meaning of texts in Spanish, even if there are many words that I don't understand :).

Btw, Romania and Spain will play against each other in the semifinal of the U18 European Championships. Today, Romania U18 defeated Germany U18 22-3. The tries were scored by Cristian Stratila, Andrei Iurea and Vladut Popa.

I'm not much into spanish rugby, but I could open that thread within a couple of weeks

Makes much sense to see romanian-spaniards (Are we in the roman empire again or what? :p) U20 because the main problem of spanish rugby has, is players start out at late age. I could train the sport after moving to Madrid from my Canary Islands. It was a sport barely played outside universities, so the under 20 must come either from the few little rugby strongholds like Valladolid and Basque Country or private schools like Licees Françaises in the main cities.

Those teenage romanians had a background rarely found among the spaniards. Tall people here focus in basketball and big people in handball.

I have a question for you dragos03. How do the Romanian Union pay for the professional league? Crowds are not massive at all?

What is the actual popularity of the sport there? It's easy to find where to train, to watch, etc? What crowd would be gathered if Romania played against a Tier 1 team lika...let's be said, Ireland?
